THURSDAY, NOV. 30, 1939 NUMBER 20 GIRL SCOUTS GIVE THANKSGIVING BASKETS Part of the group of Roanoke Rapids Girl Scouts with their Thanksgiving baskets which they prepared and delivered to needy families in the city for today’s meals. This is one of the many phases of work done by the Girl Scouts during the year. The local Girl Scout organization is partially supported in this fine work by the Roanoke Rapids Community Chest and your Chest donations help them to continue and increase their activity program. N.Y.A. officials will dedicate the Girls Scout Hut here December 7. Athletic Club. Guests of The Owls this Saturday night at The Arena will be the Manchester Athletic Club of Richmond, Va. A mass meeting in the interest of Safety in Halifax County will be held at the Halifax Grammar School at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 6th, culminating a three-day safety program to bfe held in 63 schools of Halif ity. The meeting sponsored by the newly organised Roanoke Rapids Safety Council'and will fea ture Ronald Hocutt !as principal speaker. Mr. Hocutt is director of the North Carolina Highway Safe ty Division. Other speakers on the program will be F. M. Sherry of Roanoke Rapids who will outline the purpose of the meeting, a sur vey of the Safety work in the county schools by County Super intendent V. C. Matthews, Safety in Schools by C. W. Davis, Super intendent Roanoke Rapids Schools, and the Three E’s of Safety by the following: Education by Solicitor Wade H. Dickens, Enforcement by Solicitor E. R. Tyler, Engineering by Lt. Lester Jones of the State Highway Patrol. Music will be furnished by the Roanoke Rapids High School Band and a play will be staged by the children of the Halifax School. A short film on Safety will also be shown. (A11 citizens of the county inter ested in safety are invited to at tend the meeting and a special in vitation has been extended to school bus drivers, school teach ers, truck and delivery drivers and others. A three day lecture tour of all the schools in the county is being made next week by Mr. Hocutt and his staff in the Highway Safety Division and it is also hoped to form Safety Councils in other towns of Halifax County. *5,000 IS NEED TO HIT GOAL $8,149 Reported Last Night; Drive Continues To Next Week At the Wednesday night Report Meeting of the Campaign Workers for the Community Chest Drive, it was unanimously decided to extend the Campaign for 1940 funds through Monday and Tuesday of next week. There will be report meetings at the Municipal i’-ui.fl ing at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, and >a Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday, a total of $8,149. 33 had been reported and all of the campaign leaders expressed confi* dence that the goal would be reach ed before the Drive ended. From all of the available reports, only about half of the city’s potential givers had been approached, and the time extension was made so that everybody would be given an opportunity to make their pledge. The goal is $13,205 which leaves $5,055.67 to be raised. It was explained that due to the two Thanksgiving holidays, and the early Christmas shopping, cou pled with the usual end of the month business, very few of the campaign workers had seen more than half of their subscribers, and all of the Industrial Division Ma jors pleaded for more time. In the Industrial Division, under Colonel T. J. Alford, two merry fights are taking place.
