LAST WEEKS CARD
PROVES FAST AS
OWLS WIN THREE
The Owls boxing team took two
technical knockouts and a decision
over the Hopewell team here last
Saturday night on a card that fea
tured a hout between Bob Moore
of Rocky Mount and Howard Eng
lish of Hopewell. .Moore, 165, got
to English, 175, in the second
round for a KO. The Manchester
Athletic Club of Richmond will be
the guests of the Owls this Satur
day night.
Fred Babson, 115 pound Owl,
proved the aggressor against Hen
ry Brown, 115, and was awarded a
technical knockout in the second
round of the first bout. Walter
Brown, in the 135 class, found his
opponent, James Watkins, an easy
mark and got a TKO in the sec
ond round. Dewitt Babson, 126
pounder, was the only Owl to go
the full three rounds, but he was
awarded a decision over his op
ponent, Joe Turner.
The featured bout proved one of
the hardest fought of the evening,
with Bob Moore of Rocky Mount
getting the knockout blow against
Howard English in the second
round.
The Junior Owls fought to three
draws in the preliminaries to the
main card. Clifton Acree fought
Red Ray in the first bout, which
proved one of the scrappiest of the
evening. There were several knock
downs by both boys. Acree weigh
ed in at 60 pounds and Ray at 70.
Andrew Whitley, 70 pounds, drew
with Haskell Edwards, 70 pounds.
Red Babson and Kermit Harris,
both 70 pounders, fought for the
final draw on the Junior card.
In the two cards with outside
teams the Owls have yet to lose a
bout. Working out every day in
the Arena under the supervision of
experienced fighters, the Owl pugi
lists ar developing into first rate
fighters and are commanding the
respect of all comers. Both fights
this season have kept spectators
who crowd the Arena on the edge
of their seats throughout the eve
ning.
Little is known of the strength
of the Manchester Club that comes
here Saturday night but from all
accounts the Virginia boys will of
fer the locals plenty of competition.
Referee for last week’s card was
Butty Outland; Judges were Jim
Thompson, Dick Collins, and Doug
Worsham.
