NOMINATIONS FOR CHEST TRUSTEES ANNOUNCED TODAY At a meeting held at the home Of Mr. A. L. Gilliam, Chairman of the Roanoke Rapids Community • Chest Nominating Committee, the following nominations were made to fill four positions on the Chest Board of Trustees for the next two years: K. E. The annual meeting of the Com munity Chest will be held on Mon day. January 22, to which all con tributing members are invited for the annual business session. Im mediately following this meeting, at which the new trustees will be announced, a meeting of the Board of Trustees will be held. The contributing public in Roa noke Rapids is urged to cast their ballots for their choice to the Board of Trustees, and it is plan ned to make this balloting as easy as possible under the circumstances. A staff of 10 enumerators took the field Tuesday in the eight counties that comprise the Second Congressional district to begin work on the 1940 census. A. M. Atkinson of Enfield, for mer mayor and State legislator of that city, has been appointed su pervisor of the second district, and has established his headquarters in Rocky Mount. The first census will be taken of business, industry, quarries and mines and will occupy the enumer Oil ators until some time in March. On the first of April, enumerators Will begin checking population, housing and agriculture. He came into the r It i < i KELLY, HANFORDS TO PAY PENALTY FOR MURDERING 2 City Bus And City Truck !m Wreck The new City Bus and a City Street truck were involved in an accident on the Avenue in the downtown business district early Wednesday morning. The truck, reported standing still on the right side of the street, was taking up trash. The bus, driven by Eddie Moore, was headed north when the accident occurred. One! passenger was in the bus. No one was injured. The side of the bus, the one that was purchased recently, was dam aged considerably. Roy Kelly, Wade and Ralph Han ford will die January 19. This was the date set after the three men were found guilty of murder of two officers in Burlington on De cember 7, 1938, by an Alamance jury last April. The Supreme Court yesterday affirmed the lower courts decision and the death bcb» tences will be carried out as sched uled. The three men, along with George Smith, formerly of Roanoke Rap ids, and Roy Huffman, were at tempting to rob a filling station in Burlington when officers came up on them. A battle ensued and two officers and Roy Huffman wrera rilled Smith escaped a first de gree murder charge by turning state's evidence. He was given 3ft to 30 years for his part in the crime. ATTACK IS FATAL TO J. B. HARDY 62 HERE TUESDAY PM, KIWANIS OFFICERS INSTALLED New officers for 1940 were in stalled tonight at the first meeting of the new year of the Roanoke Rapids Kiwanis Club. Immediate Past President T. J. Alford was presented the Past President’s pin by T. W. Mullen and responded by thanking the club members for their cooperation during his 1939 presidency. W. A. Thorne was installed as new president of the club for 1940, receiving the President's pin from T. J. Alford. Mr. Thorne briefly cutlined his hopes and plans for the club’s activities during the coming year. F. M. Sherry was installed as the new Vice President, a position which automatically makes him the 1941 president, this year being jsed to understudy the president’s work. Mr. Sherry made a short re sponse and promised every aid to he Thorne administration. H. E. Lee was installed as treas urer and Lawrence Stell as secre tary. With the above officers, the following directors were also in ducted into office: Dr. John Mar tin, J. E. McGee, Neal Pharr, R. L. rowe, Henry S. Loy, J. R. Alls crook.
