NEXT WEEK AT ROANOKE RAPIDS THEATRES |
pities
A completely different type of
picture for Sonja Henie, “Every
thing Happens at Night,” which
will be shown at the Peoples Sun
day and move to the Imperial for a
two-day run, Monday-Tuesday, pre
sents the famed skating star in a
combined dramatic and comedy
role. Sonja’s amazingly developed
acting ability is said to make her
perfectly at home in the story and
of course there are sequences in
which Sonja disports not only on
skates but on the sheer, shimmer
ing ski slides of the Alps. Although
Sonja’s role is essentially dramatic,
light comedy touches are injected
when Ray Milland and Robert
Cummings, as two rival newspaper
reporters, fall for her and fight for
her love as well as for one of the
biggest stories of the day.
"Everything Happens at Night”
is said to be exceptional entertain
ment.
Clair Trevor and John Wayne
have the leading roles in ‘“Alle
gheny Uprising” which will be
shown Monday-Tuesday at Peoples
Theatre.
The story concerns itself with the
dramatic uprising of the Pennsyl
vania settlers against the British
army approximately 15 years be
fore the fateful Revolution of 1776.
When indifferent army officials
failed to heed tav protests uiat
crooked traders were supplying In
dians with munitions, which in
turn were being used in savage
raids, the desperate frontiersmen o
penly revolted.
James Smith, portrayed by Wayne,
was elected leader of the “rebels”.
With his faithful followers, he tried
to expose the ilicit traffic of the
traders, but the arrogant officer
in charge of Fort Loudon ignored
the charges. Through the treach
ery of Callendar, leader of the un
principled traders, a warrant was
issued for his arrest. From this
point on the tattered frontiersmen
Were obliged to take up arms a
gainst the British garrison, a siege
that showed the Mother Country
the resourcefulness and courage of
the colonists which later broke the
shackles of her rule.
The supporting cast includes
George Sanders, Brian Donlevy,
Wilfrid Lawson, Robert Barrat and
others.
Pat O’Brien and Edward Arnold
Will be presented to their many
fans in their latest picture, “Slight
ly Honorable,” Wednesday-Thurs
day at Peoples Theatre. "Slightly
Honorable” has just been released
and has not yet been reviewed.
"Laugh It Off’ will be shown
Friday only, Bargain Day, at Peo
ples Theatre. Johnny Downs, Con
stance Moore, Marjorie Rambeau,
Hedda Hopper, Edgar Kennedy,
Janet Beecher and Cecil Cunning
ham form the cast.
Misses Rambeau, Beecher, Hop
per and Cunningham are left pen
niless when the ladies home where
they are living closes. Former ac
tresses, they head for New York to
try and find work. Johnny Downs,
a band leader and nephew of Miss
Cunningham, tries to get a settle
ment from the estate running the
home, but fails. Constance Moore,
last of the members of the family
that endowed the home, is also
broke. There is some skullduggery
and uncertainty before the girls o
pen in a night club and the show
is a success, allowing their backer
to pay off a debt and providing
them with steady work.
Charles Starrett will be present
ed in ‘The Stranger From Texas"
at the Peoples Saturday only.,
