MERCURY GETS 19 MILES TO GALLON FIRST DAY'S RUN 75 Children At Girls Scout Party Approximately 15 children enjoy ed the hospitality of the girl scouts at a party fiven in newly complet ed _scouf hut .on Hamilton _and Eighth Streets in the after loon and evening of December 22. In most eases each scout had ok guest; in some east-- two sjpouts invited one child. The children were presented a toy, an articlf of clothing, candy, nuts, and fruit4 The scouts, about 90 in number, invited their guests for two differ ent parties, one from 5 to 6 o’clock in the afternoon and one from 7 to 8 in the evening. The Hut was decorated for the Christmas season with the activities centering around a huge Christmas tree. Santa Claus was on hard to hand out the presents to the un der privileged children who made up the guest lists. The program consisted of Carols which all the children participated in, “shadow" graph' ’ under the di rection of Miss 1-ouise Brown, and the part played by Santa Claus. Cb-istmas Party M-. and Mrs. F. N. Rowe of Wel dc/i entertained at three tables of ’ridge on Thursday evening. Amid appropriate Christmas dec orations several progressions of contract were played with Mrs. D. J. Judkins winning top score prize for ladies and T. R. Manning the gentlemen’s prize. When cards wrere removed presents wrere dis tributed from a characteristic Christmas tree. The hostess served sandwiches and coffee to the following: Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Turner, Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Judkins, Mr. and Mrs. W. J Boseman, Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Ellis, Dr. and Mrs. W. A. Carter and Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Manning. Ministers in 2 Counties Organ An organization of the Methodist preachers of Halifax and North ampton counties was started at Weldon last Monday morning with the following present: Rev. P. T. Newton, Rich Square; Rev. L. E. Sawyt . Garysburg; Rev. B. P. Robins n, Weldon; and Rev. C. T. Thrift, (alifax. The mporary officers are Rev. E. P. Robinson, President, and Rev. C. T. Thrift, Secretary. The time of meeting was set for Monday after the second Sunday in each month. All the Methodist preachers of these two counties are expected to become members. Commissioners Meet In Short Session Jan. 2 The Roanoke Rapids Board of Commissioners met in a regular meeting on January 2, 1940. for a short business session. Mayor Allsbrook told the com missioners that the Roanoke Iron and Bridge Works of Roanoke. Va„ had offered their services of draw mg plans for the construction of a new jail and that he had asked the company to send an engineer to the city for that purpose. The Chief of police was instruct ed to summon all citizens of the city who are found driving with out city license. Building inspector for the city, Henry Fitts, appeared before the Board and asked a revision in the plumbing code, requiring all sewer lines of new dwellings and new work in existing dwellings extend ing from dwelling and connecting with Sanitary District lines to be of cast iron pipe. Overnight Stay Of Test Car In City Wednesday William V. White, manager o1 White Motors, Inc., local Ford Mercury and Lint oln-Zephyr deal ers, received an official telegram from the Ford Motor Co. in Norfolk today that the stock Mercury 8 se dan, conducting a 1,500 mile "econ omy test” run through North Caro lina, obtained 19 miles per gallon of gas on tile first day of the run, Tuesday, January 2nd. The "Economy Test” run is be ing conducted by the manufactur ers to show what the car will do under ordinary driving conditions over local roads. The car left Nor folk Tuesday on the first leg of its 1,500 mile journey, during which time an accurate check of the mile age obtained will be made by prom inent city and state officials along the road travelled. It will arrive in Roanoke Rapids next Wednes day, January 10th. remaining in the city overnight. A group of prom inent local citizens have been in vited to make the trip with the of ficial test car from Raleigh to the city next Wednesday, and the car, together with its authentic record of the entire trip up to date will be on display at White Motors salesrooms from 4 o’clock until the following morning at 9:30 when it will leave on another “lap” of its 1500 mile test run.
