AM Section Gives Way In Rosemary School The little second graders in Miss Reid’s room at the Rosemary gmd ed school probably thought tl|mt they were being attacked by enemy raiders 'Wednesday morning of t his week. Suddenly, in the midst of a class, a section of plastering, ap proximately 5 by 8 feet, gave tjvay and fell from the ceiling upon lthe heads of the children, sending eight of them to the hospital where they were treated for cuts vid bruises. One little girl, Peggy Ryals, (had four toes broken. The other children injured were* Margaret Ann Robinson, contusions of hand and wrist; M. C. Crane, contusion of head; Noah Saddler, cut on shoulder; Irwin Bright, cut on nose and left hand; Sidney De loatch, contusion on head; George Jenkins, contusion on right arm; der and hand. None of the children Pete Newsome, cut on left shoul were kept at the hospital. The Rosemary school was erected in 1915. In the same room about four years ago a teacher was injur ed by falling plaster, according to information from the janitor of the building. As the plastering gave way Wed nesday, it broke into small pieces, no child being hit by a very heavy ^section. (NewsKuts by Crumpler & Brigman) WORK PROGRESSES ON *25000 BRIDGE OVER RIVER HERE _ i_ The first concrete in the new $25,000.00 bridge across the nort hern arm of the Roanoke River in the new stretch of highway to be constructed between the main river bridge and Gaston will be poured early next week, according to in formation from Superintendent of construction‘•L. G. Frierson today— A small force has been at work clearing the bridge right-of-way for the past several days. A “steam" shovel is at present excavating for the seven cement pillars that will support the structure across the stream. Work on the road itself is expect ed to begin in the next few weeks. Construction of the road and bridge was undertaken by the State High way Department in order to replace the old narrow bridge across the northern arm of the river at the present and to eliminate the curves on the road between the main channel of the river and Gaston. The contract for the construc tion of the bridge was let to Kiker and Yount of Reidsville. The high way contract was let to Gregory and Poole of Virgilina. The new stretch of road will be surface treated, it is understood here. The bridge will be 256 feet long and approximately 29 feet above low water level. The work is ex pected to be completed in about four months. The road will be com pleted in about the same time, it is understood. MEN ARE | TAKING | Pyx AMS Roanoke Rapids has been award ed the N. C. National Guard Unit, a Collecting Company of the 105th Medical Regiment and for the past two days a committee has been re ceiving applications which last night were double the number needed for the peace time strength of the company. Regimental officers are in the city today and, aided by local of ficers and doctors, are giving phy sical examinations to applicants. It is expected that the usual number will fail to pass the physical exam while others may be disqualified or held for reserve because of de pendents. 120 men had made application by last night for the 66 places and more applications were being made today. About 60 per cent of the company must have no direct de pendents, leaving 40 per cent to be picked from the married men, (Continued on Page 8, Sec.
