SCHOOL NEARING COMPLETION The above photograph by the Herald Staff Photographer shows con struction nearing completion on the new school building going up five miles west of Roanoke Rapids on highway 158. The new school, which will receive a name soon according to Superintendent V. C. Matthews this week, will take in the old school districts of South Rosemary, New Hope, and Calvary. The building is expected to be ready for occupancy by September. PREPARING TO OPEN JULY 22 * Carpenters and plumbers are busy preparing the old South Rosemary school building (shown above) for the opening of the Roanoke Rapids Sum mer Camp (Preventorium) on July 22. The building was secured for this purpose from the County Board of Education. Selective examinations for children to attend the camp through the six weeks period will be held at the city clinics Tuesday, July IS. Complete story in this issue of the Herald. (NewsKut by Brigman) GIRLS REGISTER FOR CONTEST Ground was broken here this week for the 1940 Midsummer lions Festival when eleven girls registered with Mrs. Bernard AUs brook, who has charge of the pre festival ticket sales campaign, for the Festival Queen Contest. More salesladies are expected to register before the end of the week. ! The Festival, held here every summer by the Lions in order to raise money for their various civic projects, will come this year the week of August 5 through August 10. Three of the girls who have reg istered in the ticket selling con test entered the race for Festival Queen last year. They are: Lu cille Butler, Frances Ricks, and Katherine Wood. Other girls who have entered the contest thus far this year are Merle Cole, "Pat” Daniel, MUdred Ful ghum, Marjorie Lee, Bettie Mae Page, Catherine Traynham, * Mae Day, and Alberta Jones, LUTER TRACED TO BIG CITY AFTER FAKE LEADS HERE CAUGHT James Luter, shown above, was picked up in New York City Mon day morning by the New York po lice. Charged with the murder of Susie Young, he was the object of j widespread search in this section j of the state last week. Expert | sleuthing on the part of local of ficers brought about his apprehen sion. County Visited By Dairy Specialist • A. C. Kimrey, dairy specialist of the extension division of State Col lege, was in the County early this week working with County dairy men on their various problems. Es pecial attention was given to pas- : turing and feeding of dairy cattle, i Joe Riddick, Sheriff of Halifax County, and George Pittman, depu ty and county jailer, left Halifax early Tuesday morning for New York City where they will obtain custody of James Luter, local Ne gro man, charged with the fatal shooting of Susie Young, colored woman of the South Rosemary sec tion, on the night of June 29. Lu ter was located, after a week's search, in New York City and was arrested by the New York police on instructions sent by the county officers. Local officers solved the where abouts of the wanted killer after several false leads had been track ed down here. It was through their continuing vigilance and untiring effort to run down every clue that they were able to send word to the New York police that Luter would be found in that city at a certain address. The arrest was made Monday morning. Sheriff Riddick and Pitt man left for the big city by car Tuesday and will return with the prisoner sometime later this week. There were several reports here last week that Luter had been seen in this section since the murder. Officers followed every lead but were unable to locate the alleged killer. Luter is reported to have shot the woman as she loaded her own gun to drive him from her home. The Negro man, it is said, had been to the Young home earlier in the evening and had misused his wife who was staying at the Young home. The murdered woman and the Negro man had an argument, it is reported, at that time, after which Luter left to return later with his gun. The woman attempt ed to load her own gun but was shot down before being able to do 30. LEGION TEAM TO MEET HARNETT CO. HERE ON MONDAY _ The American Legion team rep resenting Halifax and Northamp ton County and made up of boys from Roanoke Rapids, Weldon, and Scotland Neck will enter the state semifinals playoff next Monday when the team goes up against Harnett County (Dunn) in a five game series for the Eastern Cham pionship. The first game of the series will be played here at Sim mons Park at S pjn. Monday after noon, July IS. The winner of the series will meet the winner of the west for the State Championship. The Rapids-Weldon club has played 11 games this season and has won 10. The boys defeated Washington four straight and Wil son 3 out of 4 in the first round. Then in the second round they jumped on Selma (Johnson Coun ty) and won the series in three straight victories. The record thus far this season gives them two championships for the season, having won over sec tion 1 and 2 in the eastern district.
