THIS SATURDAY Mildred Fulghum Leading Race For Festival Queen Going aside from their establish ed rule of showing only at night, The Roanoke Rapids Lions will give a matinee performance at the I Mid-Summer Festival next Satur day afternoon. The main gate will | open sometime between 1 and 2 o'clock, and will remain open until midnight. A | LIGHTNING KILLS MAN Eddie Brown, 33 ypar o^d colored man of near Enfield, was struck by a bolt of lightning last night and instantly killed, according to information received here today. Gene Hamil, white man who was with _Brown_ at _the -time, .was knocked down, suffering consider able shock. The two men were in a barn on the Hamil farm when the tragedy occurred. The storm in that section of the county was said to be only an ordinary electrical storm. The Negro leaves a wife surviv ing. BEGINS SCHEDULE TOMORROW \TW>S·:· Above is pictured one of the 17 busses which will arrive in Roanoke Rapids throughout the day Friday, August 9, ushering into the lives of the citizens of Roanoke Rapids and this section of the State a "New Deal" in transportation. Fought for by the leading citizens and civic clubs of this city, the Carolina Coach Company (operating the Carolina Trail way s in this section of the State) cooperated by beginning opera tions of the new lines on a temporary permit approximately 30 days before their charter takes effect. Local people who want to go to Raleigh, Norfolk, Rocky Mount, or Richmond will have ample convey ances available from tomorrow on. PERMIT GRANTED COMP'NY 17 Incoming and 17 Outgoing Busses In Every 24 Hours At 4:55 Α. M. Friday, August 9, 1940, the first bus oil the new schedule of the Carolina Coach Company's temporary franchise, which was granted last week, will roll into Roanoke Rapids from New York via Washington and Rich mond. Pausing only long enough to unload and load passengers, the bus will then head for Raleigh via Littleton, Warrenton and Louis burg—making the first official bue run over the Roanoke Rapids Louisburg-Raleigh route in history. A GUARDSMEN ENTRAIN FOR MISSISSIPPI Above photo shows the two platoons of Company B, 105th Medical Regiment of the North Carolina National Guard with headquarters at Koanoke Rapids as they stood at attention Sunday morning beside the special train which took them to Camp Shelby early gthis week. The photograph was snapped in the early dawn at the Seaboard station. Behind the guards men is a section of the ûrowd which came down to wish the citizen-soldiers "God speed." This scene marks the first event of like nature in the history of Roanoke Rapids. This was the first time an organized unit of military men ever left the city.
