These boys, lined up before their tents in Simmons Park, will leave the city September 29 for at least a year's training at Camp Jackson in South Carolina. The scene of many a hot baseball contest, Simmons Park is now serving as a camp for 66 soldiers and their commander—men whs are doing their bit in the giant defense program underway by Uncle Sam. (NewsKuts by Crumpler and Brigman) TOOL SHED GOING UP; CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN OCT. 27 Groundwork for the erection of the Roanoke Rapids National Guard Armory was laid here to day as WPA laborers prepared stakes for the surveying work and laid a foundation for a tool house. The building will be "laid out" to morrow. Actual construction on the building is officially scheduled to begin on Friday, September 27, ac cording to a statement by F. O. Muth, WPA superintendent of con struction, today. An architect from the of 3eigh will aid in the surveying worn Lenthicum and Lenthicum tomorrow. Ε. Parker, district su pervisor, will assist with the work. Work on the excavations for the building will start Friday morning, Sept. 27. Bids for WPA materials will be accepted at the Raleigh of fice October 1, it is said. The WPA will receive its materials from the central office. The supervisor here will requisition the Raleigh office for any materials needed. Whether those materials will come of this section of the state is not known. The County Commissioners, who are responsible for 35.5% of the materials and labor, are advertising for bids this week. ΝΟΥ. 27th BIG DAY Next Friday, Nov. 27th, will be a big «lay in Roanoke Rapids. Here is the program: (1) F e e d, parade, Softball game for the local National Guard Company. (2) Official start of work on Roanoke Rapids Armory. (3) Informal opening of Roa noke Rapids Country Club. (4) All-day visit by J. M. Broughton, next Governor of North Carolina. (5) Our invitation to neigh bors in Halif ax-Northampton counties to come and spend the 27th with us here in Roanoke Rapids. Captain Taylor Above is Captain T. J. Taylor, Commander of Company B. Cap tain Taylor received his promotion from First Lieutenant last Satur day. Dr. Β. E. Stephenson, who was also promoted to the rank of Captain last week, will report to Wilmington where he will take command of Company A. Born At Hospital To Mr. and Mrs. E. L. ' BAR-B-φ, ' PARADE, SOFTBALL National Guard Day To Be Celebrated Here On 27th FOR LOCAL UNIT Broughton To Visit City; Committee Meets Monday Co. B. 105th Medical Regiment, Roanoke Rapids first army unit, will be guests of honor and on pa rade at a celebration to be given here next Friday, Sept. 27th, ac cording to plans now being fonviu lated. Tentative plans call for a barbe cue-stew to be held about noon Friday at the new Recreation Club of VEPCO on the old canal. The members of the company and band will be fed there. The parade will form on the Avenue at First Street, headed by the band, color guard, officers and men of Company B. They will be followed h» service men of Roanoke Rapids, Halifax and Northampton counties, who are hereby notified to be at Roanoke Ave. and First "St at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27th, with Le gion, VFW or overseas' caps. Capt. Taylor, who has accepted the invitation for the company, will report tomorrow on a request for the Regiment Band at Henderson, now there in camp. The idea was advanced at a meet ing of the directors of the Roanoke Rapids Merchants Association Tuesday and aid was asked and promptly given by service and civic clubs. President W. P.
