COUNTY REGISTERS
6.492 MEN; CITY
NO. 3 LEADS HERE
Registering in Halifax County
yesterday were 6,492 men. Of that
total 2,089 registered in Roanoke
Rapids township.
The total registration for the
territory under the draft board No.
1 was 3,210. That territory includes
the four Roanoke Rapids precincts,
Weldon, Butterwood, and Little
ton. Following are the figures for
each of those precincts: Roanoke
Rapids No. 1—470; No. 2—430; No.
3—749; No. 4—438; Weldon—668;
Littleton—350; Butterwood—105.
Total registration for the lower
end of the county under draft
board No. 2 was 3,282.
Total registration in Northamp
ton County was 3,093. Garysburg
led in number with approximately
380. East Gaston, across river, reg
istered 306; West Gaston 128.
No figures were available tonight
for the ratio between colored and
white registrants. Kelly Jenkins,
«nu iicaucu up me xegisirauuns in
the county, said tonight that he
thought the colored outnumbered
the white registrations in some of
the rural precincts, but otherwise
:he whites led.
The work of registering in the
;ounty ran smoothly throughout
:he day, Mr. Jenkins said. Ample
îelp was secured for all the local
irecincts with citizens showing
vholehearted cooperation in
mswering the call. In some of the
>recincts sufficient numbers vol
mteered to have shifts with one
;roup working while another rest
d or went'about their various bus
nesses.
Most of the registering was com
pete by 7 p.m. The rush was seen
ι the morning with a slight rush
round mill closing time' in the
fternoon. No long lines formed at
any ο»' the precincts.
The majority of the registrant*
had their answers ready for the
questioner when they sat down at
the table. Some had to think back
through the years in order to get
dates correct. Some had to stand*
up and let the registrar guess their
height. Some had to guess at their
weight.
One colored man registered, giv
ing his age at 36. He said that he
did not know his age, but wanted
to be sure to do the right thing.
Another colored man was brought
to the precinct by his mother who
told the registrar that she wanted
to register her son. She proceeded
to give the data required by the
rpcisfrnr
Some of the registrars got their
tongues tangled up during the
early morning rush as well as the
registrants. One young lady asked
a rather timid looking man to
name the person who should be
notified in case anything happened
to him. The only answer she got
was the widening of the man'*
eyes.
Following are the names of those
helping in the registrations in the
four local precincts:
