THURSDAY, OCT. 31, 1940_ NUMBER 16 SCENE AT MILES TRIAL *ABOVE is a scene at the Miles murder trial in Halifax last week, shot just before press time last Thursday night. In the center of the picture is the defendant, Claud Miles, who pled guilty to second degree murder in the shooting of Robert Clay and was sentenced to from 22 to 30-years in prison. Seated beside him, to his left, is his wife, who stayed by his side throughout the trial. Attorneys for the defense may be seen in the picture, reading (from left-to-right) Ed Knott, Ed Travis, Julian Allsbrook, J. Winfield Crew, and Robert Josey in foreground, who is looking toward Crew. A ballot for the State officials will be found on page 5, section C of this issue of the Herald. \ i __ * • I FIRST 100 MEN IN ORDER OF MASTER DRAWING TUESDAY Below are the order and serial numbers, names, addresses of the 100 men, under the Halifax Coun ty Draft Board No. 1, whose numbers were drawn first at the master drawing in Washington Tues day. The first 100 men under the local board were included in the first 822 capsules drawn in the master drawing Tuesday. Of that first hundred, 65 are white. These men will receive the first questionnaires sent out by the local board, probably receiving them sometime early next week. After the ques tionnaires are filled out and returned, the men will be classified according to their eligibility for training service. The questionnaires will be sent to registrants at the rate of about 50 per day until all of the 3127 men under the local board have been classified. Del., City Col (Continued on Page 5) TO VOTE ON FOUR TICKETS Halifax County voters will gr to the polls next Tuesday, November 5 to vote for 30 men in the County, State, and N^ional Election. Citi zens of Roanoke Rapids will vote for three additional men for the Sanitary District Board. The outstanding vote to be cast will be that for the President of the United States. Franklin De lano Roosevelt, president since 1932, will be the candidate on the De/.io cratic ticket. On the ticket with him will be Henry A. Wallace, Sec retary of Agriculture, for Vice President. Opposing Messrs. Roosevelt and Wallace will be Wendell L. Wilkie and Charles McNairy, respectively. J. Melville Broughton heads the State Democratic ticket. Robert H. McNeill is the State Republi cans’ candidate for governor. All officers of the county and Sanitary District Board will be without opposition. One man, Con gressman John H. Kerr, on the state tickets is without an oppo nent. Other officers on the State Demo cratic ticket are: Lt. Governor, R. L. Harris; Secretary of State, Thad Eure; Auditor, Geo.
