THURSDAY, DEC. 5, 1940 NUMBER 21 TWO DRIVES OVER TOP 1 * McCRORY TO OPEN HERE SATURDAY Above is the newly completed "McCrory Corner," at Roanoke Avenue and Tenth Street, as it looks today. Thousands of visitors are expected for the informal opening of the store, to be held from 7 to 10 o'clock Friday night, after which they will open for business Saturday. The building was erected by J. Winfield Crew, local attorney. McCrory Stores Corp., operating over 200 5-10-25c stores over the Nation, occupy the 75 χ 140-ft. street floor for sales space, with full basement underneath for storage. Eleven modern apartments are located on the second floor. The store is said to be one of the most scientifically arranged in this section of the state, and is fully air-conditioned. Boughner (a bove) comes to Roanoke Rapids to take charge of the ultra-modern new McCrory 6, 10 and 25 cents store, which will open for business Saturday morning, December 7, at 9 o'clock. Mr. Boughner has plan ned an informal opehing for Fri day night, December 6, at which time executives of the McCrory Stores Corporation are expected to be here. Citizens of the city and outlying communities are invited to attend the informal opening and acquaint themselves with the store and its management. >» > Jax To Open Here Against Rocky Mt. The Jax will open their 1940-41 basketball season here next Fri day night, December 13, against the strong Blackbird quint from Rocky Mount. They are Jacob Lampley and Clarence Wilbur Loomis. A brief farewell ceremony has been arranged for them at 9:30 Friday morning. It will be heid at the Municipal Building and the public is invited. Instructions will be given them by Board chairman T. W. Mullen and government appeal agent Charley Daniel. Mayor Bernard Allsbrook will represent the city on the pro gram and the City Board of Com missioners and other city officials will be present. Representatives of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion will be present as well as BEYOND FIXED QUOTAS $1,788 Raised By Red Cross; $13,382 Sty Local Chest Two drives for funds with which to help the needy throughout the world as well as in Roanoke Ra pids and vicinity went over the top here this week as the workers re ported the contributions of local and out-of-town people. The Red Cross Roll Call reported the largest membership in the his tory of the local chapter. Solici tations amounted to $1,788.90. Roll call Chairman, Lonnie S. Neal, and Chapter Chairman, Rev. Gordon L. Price, have both expressed them selves well pleased with the 1940 drive. The workers in the Community Chest Campaign, which started last week, reported to Drive Cam paign Chairman, T. J. Alford, this week pledges totaling $13,382.24, over two hundred dollars above the goal that was set by the budget committee. Mr. Alford is having a letter of appreciation to contri butors and workers alike published in the pages of this paper this week. We ap preciate tremendously the fine spirit shown by all of the peo ple of the community in all of the several groups in making possible the continued great work of the various agencies receiving aid from the money raised for Com munity Chest purposes.
