PATROLMAN IS NJUffl CORPORAL LONG SUFFERS BRUISES IN WRECK TODAY Patrol Car Turns Over After Truck Hits It Corporal J. C. Long, State High way Patrolman, suffered painful bruises about the body this morn ing when his patrol car turned over between Weldon and Halifax. He was on his way to investigate an hit-and-run accident at Halifax when the accident occurred. The patrolman was brought to the Roanoke Rapids Hospital where he remained tonight for ob servation. Other than a few scratches about the face, he com plained of a pain in his side. Fear was felt that he had a fractured rib. He had cxpected to leave the hospital this afternoon, although hospital attaches reported that he remained there tonight. The accident occurred when the patrolman, on his way south on U. S. Highway 301, met two trucks on a curve near the second creek from Weldon. The front truck slowed down just before Mr. Long JI1V, ν AV. Λ- "V, IVMr» «,» UV»», «*»*"" Roscoe Pollard of Winter Haven, Florida, applied the brakes, caus ing the front of the truck to veer suddenly across the black line and into the patrol car. In an attempt to miss the truck, the patrolman pulled his machine off the hard surface to the shoul der of the road. The front of the truck caught into the side of the patrol car, causing it to plunge in to a ditch and turn over twice, ac cording to Patrolman H. W. Roth rock, who investigated the acci dent. The car was damaged con siderably on the left side. The truck continued on its way across the ditch and into a field. The front of the truck was dam aged. Patrolman Rothrock said to night that he himself had attempt ed to investigate the hit-and-run accident wjiich Corporal Long was on his way to when the accident happened, but that he had been un successful. He said that he had found no one that knew anything about the accident and had not learned who made the call to Cor-' poral Long. He is still working on the case. The hit-and-run accident was re ported unofficially to have hap pened at the intersection of High » "AAJUU W way 301 and the highway leading into the town of Halifax from the north. Pollard, the driver of the truck which was involved in the Long accident, was detained temporarily for a complete investigation. Corporal Long is stationed at Weldon and makes his home there. Bobbitt of Newport News spent the wçek-end in town. Miss Rebecca Leach spent Sun day night and Monday in Norfolk. A. P. Farmer of Portsmouth spent the week-end in town. Wade H. Dickens of Scotland Neck was in town Monday. Miss Lucy Leach spent Friday in Raleigh. Miss Martha C. Farmer of New port News spent the week-end with her parents. Woodland Monday night after spending the past week with Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Crawley. Mrs. W. J. Benton, Mrs. A. P. Farmer, Mr. and Mrs. Julian Acree spent Tuesday in Richmond. Mr. and Mrs. A. J. May spent the week-end in Durham and Grensboro. Mrs. John S. Vaughn and sons, John and Charles, spent Wednes day in the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Wollett. 24,726 Bales Of Cotton Has Been Ginned In County A census report from the De partment of Commerce, Bureau of the Census, shows that 24,726 bales of cotton were ginned in Halifax County from the 1940 crop prior to December 1. At this time last year only 8,940 bales had been ginned from the 1939 crop, approximately a third of what has been ginned this year. This report was sent to the Her ald by R. S.
