Patrol Car Turns Over
After Truck Hits It
Corporal J. C. Long, State High
way Patrolman, suffered painful
bruises about the body this morn
ing when his patrol car turned
over between Weldon and Halifax.
He was on his way to investigate
an hit-and-run accident at Halifax
when the accident occurred.
The patrolman was brought to
the Roanoke Rapids Hospital
where he remained tonight for ob
servation. Other than a few
scratches about the face, he com
plained of a pain in his side. Fear
was felt that he had a fractured
rib.
He had cxpected to leave the
hospital this afternoon, although
hospital attaches reported that he
remained there tonight.
The accident occurred when the
patrolman, on his way south on U.
S. Highway 301, met two trucks
on a curve near the second creek
from Weldon. The front truck
slowed down just before Mr. Long

Roscoe Pollard of Winter Haven,
Florida, applied the brakes, caus
ing the front of the truck to veer
suddenly across the black line and
into the patrol car.
In an attempt to miss the truck,
the patrolman pulled his machine
off the hard surface to the shoul
der of the road. The front of the
truck caught into the side of the
patrol car, causing it to plunge in
to a ditch and turn over twice, ac
cording to Patrolman H. W. Roth
rock, who investigated the acci
dent. The car was damaged con
siderably on the left side.
The truck continued on its way
across the ditch and into a field.
The front of the truck was dam
aged.
Patrolman Rothrock said to
night that he himself had attempt
ed to investigate the hit-and-run
accident wjiich Corporal Long was
on his way to when the accident
happened, but that he had been un
successful. He said that he had
found no one that knew anything
about the accident and had not
learned who made the call to Cor-'
poral Long. He is still working on
the case.
The hit-and-run accident was re
ported unofficially to have hap
pened at the intersection of High

way 301 and the highway leading
into the town of Halifax from the
north.
Pollard, the driver of the truck
which was involved in the Long
accident, was detained temporarily
for a complete investigation.
Corporal Long is stationed at
Weldon and makes his home there.
