Plans Series of Stag Dinners To Raise Relief Money; Bingo Parties At Rec reation Clubs Planned; Women Start Knitting, Sewing, Gathering Old Clothing The Roanoke Rapids Committee of the British War Relief Society began active work this week with the appointment of permanent committees by Chairman Mrs. R. P. Beckwith and other officers at a special meeting Monday. Under special events for raising funds for British relief, a special committee of Paul Harris, J. D. Lee and James Sears plan a series of stag suppers on Friday nights at "Hoot’s Hill” on the Thelma road. A series of ten is planned with a steak supper on Friday, fried chicken the next, roasted oysters the next and so on. It will be called the “Stop Hitler Now” Club. All men in the city are invited to join. Membership cards will be is sued the last of this week. A shack on the hill large enough to feed one hundred is being built. Another series of events planned for relief money are Bingo parties at the mill recreation clubs in the city. There will be no public drive for funds but cash donations will be gladly received by the committee. Officers and committees of the local chapter are as follows: Chairman, Mrs. R. Turner has returned :rom a trip to Asheville where she spent Christmas with her husband, [t may be of interest to some of VIr. Turner’s friends that he is im proving and was able to join his vife at her hotel for the holidays. Miss Almeta Pleasant returned to WCUNC Sunday. County Gets $25,000 From ABC Stores E. H. Ricks, chairman of the lo cal Alcoholic Board of Control, turned over an additional check for $25,000 to the County Board of Commissioners at their regular meeting Monday, January 6. This amount represents a part of the profits realized from the county ABC stores during the past quarter. The check was accepted by the Board and ordered placed in the debt and service fund for the re tirement of bonds and payment ot interest. Dr. Robert F. Young, County Health Officer, appeared before' the board to discuss the work of the Health Department. The Board ordered that the audi tor purchase from the school and debt service funds all unpaid land sales for the year 1929. On mo tion seconded and carried that property double listed through er ror in the amount of $678.86 be charged off the tax books. J. B. Hall, Superintendent of Public Welfare, submitted his monthly report and discussed the work in general in his department. Mrs. Hazel E. Wheeler, County Demonstration Agent, paid the county an additional $50 on the curb market building in Roanoke Rapids. Matthews Speaks To Enfield P.T.A. The P.T.A. had as guest speaker at their monthly meeting Tuesday evening, V. C. Matthews, of Wel don, Superintendent of Halifax County’s schools. The meeting was in the school auditorium with Mrs. R. T. Burgess, P.T.A. presi dent, in charge. Supt. H. M. Lynch introduced Supt. Matthews who made an inspiring talk to the group. A report on the cafe teria was given by Mrs. M. E. Herman. The second grade, Miss Blanche Moss teacher, won the prize for the mothers in attendance at the meeting and Miss Lydia Wells’ fourth grade won for the fathers^ attendance.
