(- ' THE ROANOKE RAPIDS - SECTION "B" SECTION "B" DIAL R-326 ALL DEP’TS THURSDAY, MARCH 13, 1941 SECTION B—PAGE 1 LOCAL CLUB PRO TO PINEHURST & GREENSBORO OPEN Ed Riccoboni, golf pro at the Roanoke Rapids Country Club, has entered the North-South Open tour nament to be held at Pinehurst on March 18 to 20. From that tourney the olcal pro will go to Greensboro •where he will compete in the Greater Greensboro Open on March 21 to 23. The young golfer, who came to the Roanoke Rapids Club from Warrenton on July 1, 1940, has proven himSfelf an excellent teacher of the game and promises to go far in the two meets. He says, however, that he does not expect to walk off with the trophy, but that he wishes to get the experience which the two tournaments will give him. The Country Club at present has approximately 100 members, three fourths of which are playing golf. Reports are that the members have found the young pro very efficient in his work with the golfers and the greens. Last week Dr. Upshur Higgin botham was elected president of the club for the ensuing year. Gor don Berkstresser was chosen vice president. Edwin Akers was elect ed secretary-treasurer some time ago. Richard H. Gray Rifes Are Held Near Garysburg Richard Henry Gray, 71, died at his home in Richmond, Va., last Sunday following an illness of several months. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Lebanon Methodist Church by Rev. G. E. Garlington in charge and burial was in the family cemetery near Garysburg. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ada Jordan Gray, and one daughter, Miss Avy Gray; two sis ters, Mrs. Annie Butler of Roanoke Rapids and Mrs. Charlie Cook of Garysburg; two brothers, T. L. Gray of Garysburg and B. D. Gray of Roanoke, Rapids. Scout Leaders Attend Meeting The following scout officials and leaders of Roanoke Rapids at tended a meeting for leaders held at Greenville on Saturday, March 8: Misses Margaret Poyner, Fran ces Newsom, Eileen Fisher, Louise Brown, Margaret Watson, Mary R. Robertson, Mesdames Sam Bunn, A. O. George, Cecil Buxton, and Graham Shell. The conference at Greenville was held in connection with Na tional Girls Scout Week which began yesterday. Finch - Daniel Mrs. Alice Daniel announces the marriage of her daughter, Willie, to Dewey Finch on March 10, 1941, in the House of Prayer, Roanoke Rapids, the ceremony being per formed by the pastor of the church, Mrs. H. J. Finch. The couple will make their home in Roanoke Rap ids. CIRCLE MEETS The Lottie Moon Circle held its regular monthly meeting last Thursday evening, March 6, in the home of Mrs. Scott Hasty on Wil liams Street. The meeting was opened with the hymn, “The Way of the Cross Leads Home”. Mrs. I. B. Leslie led in prayer. Then the watchword for the year was re cited. Following Mrs. H. W. Wheel er read the Scripture which was taken from Psalms 107:1-16. "A merica” was then sung. Mrs. Wheeler read and discussed the lesson. The topic was “An Urgent Gospel-Need of Homeland”. Both old and new business was discussed and the closing hymn was “Jesus Saves”. At the conclusion of the meeting Mrs. Hasty, assisted by Mrs. Wheeler, served delicious re freshments to the following: Mes dames C. W. Moore, M. M. Moore, Eddie Wilson, I. B. Leslie, J. M. Faison, and Miss Elizabeth Brown. Business Circle Meets The Business Girls Circle of the First Presbyterian Church met in the home of Miss Winifred Beck with last Thursday evening, March 6. The meeting was called to order by the chairman, Miss Margaret Wood. The report of the secretary and treasurer was given by Mrs. John Buck. Both old and new bus iness was discussed. The members were invited to attend a supper given in the Recreation building of the church by the Auxiliary on Tuesday. The topic for the pro gram was “How Better Serve My Church”, which was presented by Miss Nellie Morris, assisted by Misses Gertrude Wood, Gladys Morris and Winifred Beckwith. The Bible Study was conducted by Miss Gertrude Wood. At the close of the meeting Miss Beckwith served delicious refreshments to the fol lowing: Mesdames Rupert Hardy, C. A. Wyche, John Buck, Graham Shell, Charles Dickens, Russell Daniel, Zeb Denny, Edward Hutch eson, J. C. Bryant, Hubert Parrott, Misses Gertrude Wood, Mildred Lee Moore, Susan Holliday, Nellie Morris, Louise Brown, Gladys Mor ris, Louise Daniel and Margaret Wood. Mrs. Vaughan Honored Mrs. C. E. Vaughan was given a surprise birthday party Feb. 25, honoring her 53rd birthday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. W. Harper, with Mrs. Harper and oth er children of Mrs. Vaughan as hostesses. Spring flowers were ef fectively used throughout the house. A salad plate was served to the following: Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Vaughan, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Vaughan, Mr. and Mrs. Grady Haw kins, Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Dan iels, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Harper, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Rogers, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Vaughan, Mrs. Dora Drewett, Misses Maude Arm strong, Effie Lee, Annie Mae Davis, Edna Speight, Lila Lee Harper, Helen Hawkins, Dorothy Arm strong, and Joe Ann Bailey, Cros by Vaughan, Charles Daniels, Ed ward Harper, Rabon Casper and Jimmy Bailey. Mrs. Vaughan re ceived many useful gifts. Mrs. Pope Hostess Mrs. R. M. Pope was hostess on Wednesday evening to her bridge club and other guests. After sev eral progressions the scores were added and Mrs. H. E. Gibson won high, Mrs. Chas. Fitts second high for club, while the guest prizes were presented to Mrs. W. C. Wil liams for high and floating. Mrs. M. F. White, a club member who has been absent on account of ill ness, was also remembered with a gift. A salad course with coffee was served at refreshment time. Guests and members present were Mesdames George Cook, Bill Cher ry, Ellis Crewe, Clyde Liske, Clar ence Coburn, Bernard Allsbrook, W. C. Williams, John Lupton, Beaman Helms, Chas. Fitts, Francis Starke, Calvin Kennemur, T. M. Bullock, M. F. White, H. E. Gibson, Miss Janie Lassiter. Mrs. Bill Carter came in for refreshments. J. R. Statler of Martinsville, Va., was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Fisher Sunday.
