THURSDAY, JUNE 5, 1941_ NUMBER 46 JENKINS TAKES OATH .TOr-mrnnnnrnmm Kelly Jenkins, perennial “chief executive” of Roanoke Rapids, is shown above taking the oath of office as Mayor Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock in the meeting room of the city commissioners. Administering the oath is Mrs. Dorothy A. Shearin, assistant city clerk and Notary Public. Mayor Jenkins began his fifth two-year term in office this week, and he served four prior consecutive terms 1931-1939. The re tiring Mayor, W. B. Allsbrook, was elected for the 1939-41 term. SUPERIOR COURT MAKES PROGRESS ON BIG POCKET Grand Jury Recommends Wine Sold In County Be Analyzed The docket for a two-weeks "mix ed” term of Superior Court was cleaned up except for some tax cases and divorce actions before the court took a recess Wednes day afternoon to reconvene again on next Monday morning for the second week. At this week’s session, which be gan June 2, court officials went through a list of those indicted for failure to list their taxes, and all defendants appearing were given suspended sentences upon payment of costs of court and all back taxes. A) Meet Friday On Baseball A number of local cijtizens have expressed interest in the organiza tion of a baseball team here this year, and a meeting will be held at the Herald office Friday morn ing at 9:30 o’clock to determine whether or not sufficient players can be rounded up to compose a team and if the proper support of a team might be expected. It has been reported by Jim Willis that a number of players have been contacted in' regard to playing on a local team, and tenta tive plans made for equipment. TAKES OVER ★ ★★★★★★★ PLAY TO BEGIN ON GROUNDS Summer Program For Children To Begin Monday The city playgrounds ror wnue children will open Monday for ten weeks of supervised recreation in various sections of Roanoke Rapids, it was announced today by Super visor J. C. Hoyle. The four designated playgrounds are at “Bunker Hill”, Central Grad ed School, area near Patterson Mill tennis courts, and an area on 9th Street between Franklin and Rap ids streets. In addition, the Rose mary swimming pool will be open in the mornings and afternoons. A playground for Negro children has been supervised since last week at John Armstrong Chaloner school (Continued on Page 8, Sec. A) >>>m > ->»->—> E. H. Graves, right, has been named 1941 chairman of the Com munity Chest drive for funds. Chairman Graves automatically be came a member of the Board of Trustees with the appointment, and the drive will be held next fall. GRAVES Sound Truck Is Outlawed Thru New Ordinance Kelly Jenkins took the oath of the office of Mayor of the City of Roanoke Rapids and Messrs. M. D. Collier and R. I. Starke took the oath of the office of Commissioners at a meeting on Tuesday, June 3. Following the administration of the oaths by Notary Mrs. Dorothy Shearin, the Mayor and Commissioners trans acted important business relative to the city. Outstanding item among those discussed and disposed of was the motion to submit certain re quirements to state roads within the city limits. This measure was presented to the board by the Mayor, who stated that under the new Highway Act, funds are to be alloted according to popu lation, the length of the State Highway system through the town, and the actual needs of main tenance (which does not exclude construction). The Mayor recom mended that the following re quirements be submitted to the Highway Commission: 1. Highway from Junction east (Continued on Page 8, Sec.
