CAROLINA —
— BIRD LORE
The Canada Goose
Flocks, aggregating many thou
sands, of these great grey birds
spend the winter on Lake Matta
muskeet, though the habitat of
:he Canada Goose with us is not
so restricted as that of the whistl
ng Swan, large numbers of the
former wintering all down our
;oast line from Currituck Sound
:o the southwest corner of the
Pamlico Sound, with many scat
tering flocks to be found on the
ower sounds, Lake Ellis and other
suitable bodies of water. They also
>ccur in some numbers for many
miles up the valley of the Yadkin
Hiver. They seem to be equally
Lt home on both fresh and salt
vater.
Of course, none of the geese
lecure their food by diving, taking
heir ell-grass or other suitable
ood directly from the bottom in
mmparatively shallow water. They
Jso feed to a certain extent on
and, a winter wheat field prov
ng an acceptable area for se
uring nourishment.
Many of these geese nest with
1 the borders of the United
States, contrary to the habits of
ther members of the group that
est only in the far north. In
ome sections, trees seem to be
avored as nesting sites rather
han the ground, this being parti
ularly true of the Reelfoot Lake
egion.
The loud "honking” cry of this
pecies is one of its noticeable
haracteristics.
Description: Head and neck,
black, with white throat and
white patch on side of head.
Wings and back, grayish brown.
Tail, black. Belly and breast,
grayish, fading to white on lower
belly. Average weight, about 8
pounds, with some'old males sev
eral pounds heavier.
SCHOOL
TAX RATE
CUT AGAIN
Another reduction in the Roa
noke Rapids Graded School Dis
trict has been effected by the local
school board headed by Chairman
R. L. Towe, and the 19^1 tax mill
be 90 cents per 100 valuation of
property in the school district.
The 90-cent rate represents a
five cent reduction from the rate
last year of 95 cents, and is the
second successive year it has been
possible to lower the rate. Last
year the district tax was slashed
from $1 to 95 cents, and another
five-cent reduction has been made
this year.
A spokesman for the board said
the lower rate was made possible
by a reduction in the outstanding
debt due to the retirement of
school bonds recently. The 90-cent
school district rate will bring ap
proximately $90,000 for operation
of schools here as the property
valuation is around $10,000,000.
Schools in the district are the
Junior-Senior High School, the Ju
nior High School, and four elemen
tary schools—Central, Rosemary,
Clara Hearne and Vance Street.
In addition to Chairman Towe,
members of the district school
board are: W. L. Manning, E. W.
Eubanks, F. D. Wilson, A. O. Pen
dleton, W. L. Medlin, W. T.
Hodges. Dr. Bahnson Weathers, E.
A. Telliga, and Superintendent of
City Schools C. W. Davis who is
secretary to the board.
Miss Virginia Connor spent the
week-end in Norfolk.
Miss Mildred Ray Grant of Em
poria was the guest of Miss Mary
Louise Ray Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Thompson
spent last Sunday in Snow Hill.
