ORDER SUPPORT OF DEPENDENTS GET DEFERMENT Draft-Age Men With Dependents To Be Deferred Local draft board officials an nounced today thi... national Selec tive Service headquarters has or dered the deferment of draft-age married men and other registrants with one or more dependents to whose support they make “any substantial contribution.” Instructions to that effect were sent to all State Selective Service directors by Brigadier General Lewis B. Hershey, who also order ed the reclassification of all such men who have been placed in Class 1-A by their local board. Twfenty-four white men are sche duled to leave here on July 8 for induction into the army, and the call completely exhausted the group of men already classified, examined and awaiting their call to service. In order to fill the quota, the local board had a large number of men examined yesterday and from the group will be selected six to go with the 18 men notified that they will be inducted into military service next Tuesday. Conference For Draff Officials At Rocky Mount District conferences for local board members, clerks, appeal agents, and examining physicians of the Selective Service Act were held yesterday at Rocky Mount. State Administrative officials of the Selective Service. Act led the discussion for local board mem bers, clerks, and appeal agents at a conference held in the re corder’s court room of the Rocky Mount Municipal Building. A me dical officer from an induction station and a State medical of ficer from headquarters conducted a discussion of the medical pro blems of examing physicians in the old recorder’s court room over the Rocky Mount Chamber of Commerce office. Both conferences began at 2 p.m. Clerk M. McRae Faison of the local draft board, Chairman T. W. Mullen, W. A. China, D. W. Sei fert and Appeal Agent C. R. Oakman, buyer of outing flannels for Sears Roebuck Com pany, was in the city this week on a visit to the local mills. Sears Roebuck buys outing flannels from the Roanoke Mills No. 1, and is one of the largest purchasers of the material in the world. Accompanying Oakman to Roa noke Rapids was his elghteen year-old son, W. C. Oakman, Jr. They arrived here Tuesday and plan to leave the city tonight. Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Lynch and children, Mrs. P. Y. Sermon Theme: “The Harvest and The Reapers”. Funeral Services for W. E. Andleton Funeral services for W. E. Andle ton, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. S. Powell, 363 Lee Ave., Hampton, Virginia, were held at Smith Methodist Church, near Weldon, on Saturday, June 28, at 2:30 o’clock. The services were conducted by the Pastor, the Rev. O. I. Hinson. Active pallbearers were: Ray mond Garner, Clifton Garner, A. L. Garner Linwood Andleton, Ray mond keeter and Howard Keeter. Mr. Andleton was a native of Halifax County, but for the last six months had made his home with his daughter in Virginia. He had been in ill health for some time. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Enda Andleton; four daughters, Musie, Estelle, Lois Andleton, and Mrs. J. S. Powell of Hampton, Va.; six sons, Paul, Clayton, Charlie, of Newport News, Va., Eugene and Leo of Portsmouth, Va., and brother, A. W. Andleton of Enfield; and a sister Mrs. Nellie Garner of Weldon; afso 11 grandchildren. BIRTHDAY PARTY Tommie Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Smith, celebrated his tenth birthday Friday afternoon with a party at his home on Ham ilton Street. Funeral Services For Lewis Cook Lewis L. Cook, 59, died at his home at Littleton about midnight after an illness of about six months with a cancer. A native of Halifax County, he was well known in his community where he took an active part in various activities. He was a mem ber of the Ebenezer Methodist Church. Funeral services were held from the home Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock, conducted by the Rev. H. L. Davis of the Littleton Methodist Church, assisted by the Rev. Mr. Jones. Interment was in the Hedgepeth family cemetery at Darlington. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Nora Hedgepeth Cook; five dau ghters, Misses Alice and Louise Cook, Mrs. Sterling Warrent, Mrs. Ezra Jordan and Mrs. Harvey Warren; and two sons, Alfred and Joe Cook, all of Littleton; a sis ter, Mrs. J. H. Tanner of Darling ton; a brother, J. T. Cook of Brinkleyville; and eight grand children. Attend Camp The following Girl Scouts of Troop 3 and Troop 4 attended camp June 21-28 at Camp Balance Rock near Henderson: Dorothea Askew, Jo Ann Brasington, Margaret Brown, Mae Allen Burbage, Rose Cooksey, Helen Daughtry, Joseph ine Draper, Annette Edwards, Hat tie Mae Gray, Louise King, Mae Leitner, Shirley Taylor, Thelma Taylor, Pheny Webb, Nelda Wil liams and Patsy Wolhar. In spite of the rainy weather the scouts managed to participate in many activities listed in the out door Cooks Badge, leaving only a few loose ends which they intend to tie up on hikes this summer. The sample of outdoor cooking at camp was very inspiring.
