THURSDAY, JULY 17,1941 NUMBER 52 GOVERNOR TAKES HAND IN WRECK CASE MEN ARE TRIED IN HALIFAX Woman Reports Accident To Broughton Governor J. M. Broughton took a hand in bringing to justice three men involved in an automobile accident in Halifax County this week, and shortly thereafter they were tried in the county record er’s court on various charges. The automobile in which the men—David Hobbs, Harry Gupton and Edward Haithcock—were rid ing struck an automobile driven by the chauffeur of R. B. Young af Henderson on the detour be iween Roanoke Rapids and Little ion Monday afternoon. Young’s car was being driven by Junius Hesr ler, enroute from Henderson to Emporia, Va., with Mrs. Young, aer three children, and a Negro maid, Annie Burdette. Young's automobile was turned >ver by the collision, and Hes ;er climbed from the car and ap proached the one of the white nen, which had gone into a ditch. The three resented Hester’s at empt to read their license plate, idiich had apparently been bent n the collision, and there were vords between them and Hester. Juite a bit of profanity was used >y the men, it was reported. Mrs. Young then walked up, and .fter a heated argument between ler and the white men she al agedly was roughly shoved away rhen she tried to get the license umber. Hobbs, Gupton, and Haith ock then pushed their car from he ditch and drove away. The woman phoned Governor ’roughton as soon as possible af ar the incident, and complained f the treatment she had received com the motorist. A) • RESULTS OF RAID NEAR HERE Part of the damage done by five white men to the Riverside Inn and filling station just across Roanoke River from here in Gaston Township of Northampton County can be seen in the above photograph, which shows window panes broken when the men threw beer bottles through them after taking beer from the station against the wishes of the proprietor who refused to sell it to them because of their drunken condi tion. Tried in the Northampton County recorder’s court at Jackson the “raiders”, one of whom was shot in the shoulder with a rifle when the operator of the place tried to protect the property, drew suspended sentences. They agreed vo reimburse the proprietor tor damage to the station, and the beer they drank. MANAGER It S. DRIVE WILL BE HELD NEXT WEEK ►TORY ON PAGE 6, SECTION A NORTH STATE DRIVE A drive is now underway in Hal ifax County to secure contribu tions to the Old North State Fund, headed by Governor J. M. Brough ton as honorary chairman, to pro vide an airplane ambulance as a gift to Great Britain from the cit izens of North Carolina. Mrs. Annie Kitchin Josey of Scotland Neck is the county chair man of the Old North State Fund in Halifax County, and others serving on the committee are R. W. Alston, Enfield; H. W. Johnson, Weldon; Mrs. L. H. Justice, Little ton; Mrs. Joe L. Riddick, Scotland Neck; Eric Rodgers, Scotland .Neck; Mrs. W. G. Suiter, Weldon; and E. L Travis, Halifax. The Roanoke Rapids group is composed of Julian R. Allsbrook, A. N. Martin, Judge R. H. Parker, J. Winfield Crew and C. L. Wilson. Purchase and delivery of this mercy ship to England will cost ap proximately $75,000, which the OV North State Fund desires to raise through individual contributions from the citizens of North Carolina. Upon the advice of the British American Ambulance Corps, which is licensed by the Hon. Cordell Hull, U. S. Secretary of State, and by the British government, an amphibian, twin-motored Grumann airplane ambulance has been selected. This plane accommodates four stretcher cases, two sitting cases, pilot, co pilot and medical attendant, and is equipped with the latest devices for (Continued on Page 12, Sec. A) "COPPER" Governor J. He called the State Highway ; Patrol station near Raleigh, and had the alarm broadcast for of- ; ficers to arrest the men involved. : Broughton’s other experience as j a volunteer policeman came in 1912 i when he was a Winston-Salem : newspaper reporter. About 3 o’ clock one morning, he was on his way home after work when he saw a blaze burst out in a building. He noted all that happened, returned to Ids office and wrote a story of ' (Continued on Page 12, Sec. A) MEDLIN ENTERS APPEAL Case Is Aired In Recorder's Court Tuesday C. E. Medlin, local white man, was sentenced to 12 months on the roads in the county recorder’s court at Halifax on Tuesday by Judge C. R. Daniel for assulting his daughter, Minnie Medlin, 19>, after the two had an argument over a woman whom Medlin alleg edly had been living in the same house with for several months. Judgment in the case was sus pended upon good behavior for 12 months, during which time he is not to see the other woman, Edna Mayton, who has left Roa noke Rapids according to reports today. Medlin appealed from the sen tence imposed by the recorder, and the case is scheduled to be tried it the next term of Superior Court whick begins August 11. He was placed under a $175 bond for his ippearance in Superior Court. According to testimony at the trial in the county recorder’s ;ourt, Medlin and his daughter tiad an argument on June 21, dur ng which she told him that he ihought more “of somebody else” ;han he did her. He denied her itatement and slapped her, she laid, and when she repeated the :harge he whipped her with a belt, fhe warrent charged him with as laulting her with a leather strap >n her body. The girl stated in x>urt that one of the licks on her >ack drew blood. Local officers and other wit lesses, including Mrs. Joe Gray md Mrs. Rosa Wells, testified as to Jedlin’s alleged relations with Ed la Mayton. They stated that he lad been seen in the company of he woman frequently, and he was irrested at the house in which ihe was living. It is reported that Medlin and lis wife have been living apart or some time, and he had been itaying at a house with Edna Jayton. The man’s daughter stated that ifter the first argument with her ’ather, which followed by the as lult with the belt, they had ano ;her quarrel on June 26 and he dapped her again.
