School Will Be Held At Halifax August 26-27-28 The Highway Safty Division, in conjunction with the Highway, Safety Patrol, has arranged to con- i duct a safety course for all school ^us drivers in Halifax County on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thurs day, August 26-27-28. Superintendent V. C. Matthews, of Halifax County schools said that all applicants for jobs as school bus drivers will be notified to attend in groups. There were 48 drivers, 33 white and 15 Negro, in the coun ty last year, and about 70 persons are being considered as drivers for the coming year. All are being notified to attend in groups of about one-third the total number each day, with the Negro applicants all reporting on the last day—August 28. Only white drivers going to Au relian Springs, Hollister, William R. Davie, and Weldon will report the first day, Tuesday morning, August 26. Drivers of buses that go to Enfield, Hardrawee, Scotland Neck and Hobgood will report on Wednesday morning, August 27. Supt. Matthews said all substi tute drivers are expected to attend the safety school, and letters are being sent out to all white prospec tive drivers telling them when to report. Anyone notified to attend the safety school is not assured of a job driving the buses, however, Supt. Matthews said. The classes are to determine if the applicants for the jobs can qualify as school bus drivers and the final selection will be made by the Highway Pa trolmen and the county mechanic. Everyone who has asked to be con sidered as a driver should report, the county school official stated. Classroom work will begin at 7: 30 o’clock in the morning, and con tinue all day. The instructions will be given in the Halifax School building, and some demonstration work at the shop. Mrs. S. B. Pierce and Mrs. D. Allen Green and children spent last week at Virginia Beach. Jessee Harvel, Jr., of Fort Bel voir, Va., spent Sunday with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Harvel. Frank Cole, Jr., has joined the U. S. Army. Evelyn Mitchell is visiting in Richmond, Va. Miss Edith May Alston is visit ing in Freemont. Mrs. N. S. Barnes, Mrs. Roscoe Hamel and little son, Wilkins, and Miss Georgia Wills Tilghman left Sunday for Nags Head where they •will spend several weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. R. Daniel and family and the Rev. and Mrs. Carney Hargrove and family have returned from a weeks stay at Virginia Beach. Mrs. Lennie Todd has returned from a stay with her son in Ra leigh. Mrs. Ruby Murrill, Miss Sara Murrill and Lee Murrill spent the week end with Mrs. Rena Crocker. Mrs. Elsworth Jones and son, of Franklin, Va.. are guests of Mrs. R. P. Morehead. Mrs. Tommy Dover of Laurel, Md., is spending some time with her mother, Mrs. N. J. Shepherd, who has been quite ill. Misses Eunice and Elizabeth Clark have returned from a stay at Atlantic City, N. J. Friends of Mrs. T. A. Whitfield will be sorry to know that her sis ter, Mrs. Verner Godwyn, is a pa tient in Roanoke Rapids Hospital. Mrs. Curtis Sledge and daughter, Christine, have returned home from a stay at Coinjock. Mrs. W. E. Murrill has returned home from Morehead. FESTIVAL BREAKS RECORD The Lions Club’s fifth annual Mid-Summer Festival here last week broke all previous records for attendance and receipts, ac cording to preliminary reports, and officials of the civic organization expressed themselves as well pleased with the event. Miss Reba White, of Pleasant Hill was the winner of the $500 grand prize which was presented Saturday night after the shows and rides had been closed for the final night of the week’s festival. The prize was awarded by H. B. “Ted” Speight, who also presented winners with $25 nightly prizes during the week. Crowned as “Queen of the Festi val” was Mamie Little Cooper, who was sponsored as “Madam X” dur ing the advance ticket sale con test by the Dr. Pepper Bottling Company of this city. Julian R. Allsbrook, a member of the House of Representatives during the past North Carolina General Assembly, crowed the queen admist the splendor of her court which was comprised of othe young ladies selling tickets to the festival for the club. In addition to being crowned Queen, she was also presented $50 as first prize in the ticket-selling contest for having the most votes —25,700. Second prize of $25 went tc Es telle Braswell, who received 20,120 votes in the contest. Geraldine Butler won the third prize of $10, with 19,330 votes. Votes received by other young ladies in the contest were: Mildred Fulgum, 17,170; Fannie Stephen son, 14,800; Virgie M. Whitby, 12, 350; Margaret Tucker, 11,520; Hel en Pope, 6,395; Lucille Butler, 5, Alice Jones, 3,500; Evelyn EJdridge, 040; Dorothea White, 4,700; Mary 2,500 and Lee Baird, 2,000. Eocpress Thanks Lions Club officials expressed their thanks for the local fire de partment which furnished firemen as deputized officers to help police the show grounds and assist in the event of trouble or accidents. Ap preciation was also stated for the courtesy of the McPherson Broth ers Bottling Company, Coca-Cola Bottling Company for concessions selling their products at the show grounds and turning the profits over to the Lions Club.
