Local Racket
A new sort of “racket1' was at
tempted on a country road near
here when Otis Byrd tried to make
Mr. and Mrs. Howard P. Rose pay
for the privilege of parking to en
joy the cool country breeze on a
hot night recently.
Byrd demanded that the married
couple pay him a dollar when he
came upon them parked in a cool
spot along the road, listening to
the car radio.
When Rose refused the demand,
Byrd became angry and hit at the
couple with a four-foot stick of
wood, although he did not own or
have anything to do with the land
beside which Mr. and Mrs. Rose
had parked.
Byrd was given a hearing before
Magistrate W. O. Thompson and
the case was sent to the county
recorder’s court at Halifax where
Judge C. R. Daniel sentenced Byrd
