WHITE SCHOOLS IN COUNTY SYSTEM TO BEGIN ON SEPT. 8 Meetings Are Set For White And Negro Faculties Superintendent V. C. Matthews, of Halifax County schools announc ed today that all white schools in the county system will begin on Monday, September 8. A meeting of faculty members of all white schools is scheduled to be held in the school building at Halifax on Friday morning, Septem ber 5, at 10 o’clock. Superintendent Matthews stated that several mat ters of great importance are to be discussed at the county-wide meet ing, and one coming up to be ex plained is the retirement system for teachers which concerns all of them. Miss Julia Weatherington of the Division of Instruction Service, State Department of Education, Ra leigh, will be present at the meet ing. All Negro schools in the county not previously opened, Supt. Mat thews said, will start on Monday, September 1. A county-wide meet ing for Negro teachers is scheduled to be held in the county courthouse at Halifax on Friday morning, Au gust 29, at 10 o’clock. Sentence Man For New Kind Local Racket A new sort of “racket1' was at tempted on a country road near here when Otis Byrd tried to make Mr. and Mrs. Howard P. Rose pay for the privilege of parking to en joy the cool country breeze on a hot night recently. Byrd demanded that the married couple pay him a dollar when he came upon them parked in a cool spot along the road, listening to the car radio. When Rose refused the demand, Byrd became angry and hit at the couple with a four-foot stick of wood, although he did not own or have anything to do with the land beside which Mr. and Mrs. Rose had parked. Byrd was given a hearing before Magistrate W. O. Thompson and the case was sent to the county recorder’s court at Halifax where Judge C. R. Daniel sentenced Byrd to eight months on the roads, Funeral Services Lasker Woman Funeral services for Mrs. Cor nelia Rosetta Draper, 81, of Las ker were held Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock from the Methodist church. Interment was in the fam ily cemetery. Mrs. Draper was the second of nine children born to Arodi and Nancy Francis Draper. She mar ried Chesley W. Draper on Janu ary 17, 1878, and to them were born nine children, all of whom are living. She joined the Methodist Church early in girlhood and lived a con tinuous active Christian life. Her husband, who died July 7, 1915, was also an active Methodist Church member. Pallbearers were J. R. Adams, A. J. Brigman, C. L. Bristoe, C. B Camp, Lester Collier and Russel Bridgers. Surviving are the following chil dren: Mrs. J. S. Rose, Staunton, Va.; Richard E. Draper, California; Mrs. D. G. Britton, Jackson; Mrs W. T. Collier, Lasker; Mrs. J. E Collier, Lasker; Stanley C. Draper Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; S. Olir Draper, Lasker; Mrs. B. B Barnes, Portsmouth, Va., and C Gattis Draper, Portsmouth, Va. Other survivors are twenty-twt grand children and fourteen great S-—-—— grandchildren survive; a brother, the Rev. J. T. Draper, retired min ister of the Methodist Church after a half century of service in North Carolina Conference, Warrenton; and a sister, Mrs. W. H. Brown of near Lasker. She was the grandmother of Ru fus Britton of this city. Funeral Services For Rook Infant Funeral services for' the four months-old infant of Mr. and Mrs IW. O. Rook of Garysburg were helc from the home Monday afternoor at four o’clock, conducted by the I Rev. Mr. Wagner. Burial was ir the family cemetery, near the home. The child died in the local hos pital after a short illness. Surviving are the parents ane several brothers and sisters. Robert Taylor In " Billy The Kid"' At Levon Theatre The Levon Theatre at Weldon will present Robert Taylor and Maureen O’Sullivan in “Billy The Kid” on Sunday and Monday, and news and an act will complete the two-day program. “Scatergood Pulls The Strings”, starring Guy Kibbee in a picture based on the famous “Seattergood” character of Clarence Budington Kelland’s fiction, will be shown at the Levon on Tuesday and Wed nsday of next week. A comedy and act will also be shown. Thursday and Friday of next week the Levon Theatre will show Brenda Marshall and David Bruce in “Singapore Women”. The pro gram also includes a comedy and act. Double-feature day is Saturday of next week when Forrest Tucker will be presented in "Emergency Landing”, and Johnny Mack Brown and Fuzzy Knight in "Rawhide Rangers”. Chapter One of “The Spider Returns”, will also be shown.
