Miss Christine Alston spent Wed nesday in Norfolk, Va. Miss Frances Gullage of Green wood, S. .C., is visiting Miss Cath rine Hardison. Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Manning and children, Catherine, Agnes, and Tom, Jr., are spending sometime at Carolina Beach. CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS The need for office machine op erators under the defense pro gram has increased steadily. A new examination for under mimeograph operator has just been announced by the Civil Service Commission, for appointment in Washington, D. C., only. The position pays $1, 260 a year. Applicants will be rated on their experience, and no writ ten test will be given, They are re quired to automatic paper-feed mimeograph machines. While ap plications will be accepted until further notice at the Commission’s Washington office, persons who can qualify are urged to file their ap plications at once. The Commission also announced an examination for Junior En gineer at $2,000 a year, the optional branches being aeronautical en gineering, naval architecture and Marine engineering. Applicants may qualify if they have completed a professional engineering course at a college or university of recog nized standing with major study in the optional branch chosen. The general requirements for the naval architecture and marine engineer ing option have been modified to allow graduates from a college curriculum in aremieciure 10 appiy if they have had special study or experience in naval architecture or marine engineering. This same provision applies to graduates from general engineering courses. Applicants for the aeronautical op tion may qualify if they have had a general 4-year engineering course suplementad by either study or ex perience in aeronautical engineer ing. Provision has also been made for the utilization of defense train ing courses in marine or aeronau tical engineering or naval archi tecture. For this examination ap plications will be rated as soon as practicable after receipt at the Commission’s office until June 30, 1942. Full information as to the re quirements for these examinations and application forms, may be ob tained from Carl Churchill, Secre tary of the Board of U. S. Civil Service Examiners, at the post of fice in this city, or from the Se cretary of the Board of U. S. Civil Service Examiners, at any first or second class post office. SURPRISE PARTY John O. Matthews complimented Mrs. Matthews recently with a surprise dinner and informal party in honor of her birthday. Dinner guests were Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Iddings, Mr. Frank Muth, and Mr. C. A. Elliot. Those at tending the evening party were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lee Oliver, Mr. and Mrs. Carlton Stacia, Mrs. D. P. Jierce and Mrs. Dora Grant Bingo was played throughout the evening with prizes for the win ners. At ten o’clock delicious home made ice cream and birthday cake was served.
