It’s a very small plaee located on the Neuse River about twenty miles below New Bern, N. C., di rectly in front of where the new Marine base will be located. Fish ing was not so good. But for good swimming, and real relaxation it’s a swell plaee to go.—Fishing was good for everyone but me! —o—• Our party stayed at Ashford Cot tages, located right on the river front. The cottages are managed by Dick Martin, a local boy. Every body here in Roanoke Rapids knows Dick Martin. _ After playing in orchestras and stage shows from coast to coast, Dick has decided to settle down in a nice quiet spot like Minnesott and help people have a vacation. > -O— If you are interested in a quiet place for a vacation, or week-end trip this summer or winter, drop Dick Martin a line at Minnesott Beach, Arapahoe, N. C., and he will fix you right up. This winter he plans to operate a hunting lodge, just across the river. I’ll say this much for ^Dick—he is considerate of your every need; in other words, my friends, he is a perfect host. —o— The Romancos will play the Capitol City League All Stars at Mayo’s Island, Richmond, Va., this Friday night. Game time 9 p.m. It is the annual Crippled Childrens Benefit game staged each year by the City Council. This will be the second straight year that the Ro mancos have been invited to play the fature game. —o— Mrs. R. T. Mountford of 810 Hen ry Street really is having a swell vacation. She is visiting Mrs. Sport Hayes in Deland, Fla., for two weeks and then will visit Mrs. R. A. Lewis in Orlando, Fla. for a week. She is accompanied by two children, Dorothy and Franklin. Meantime husband Rufus, who is chairman of the Rosemary Recrea tion Committee, is boss at home— for the “first time in twenty four years”. —o— All men connected with the Weave rooms of Rosemary Mfg. Co. will meet and eat at Harrison Springs Saturday at noon. Tickets will be fifty cents and the menu will be barbecue and stew . Tickets can be purchased from committees in each weave room. The affair is handled by Prof. Will Nelson. After eats a program will be car ried out. —u Roanoke No. 2 Red Raiders left here Wednesday from Weldon for a four day trip to New York. The party was under the direction of Shearod Grumpier, manager of the softball team at No. 2 plant. The trip was awarded by Roanoke and Patterson Mills Co. as a prize for the team finishing first in the City Softball League, from their three plants. —o— Pickups N’ Putouts: On a vacation for the first time in four years—Mr. and Mrs. Ned Manning and son, Billy—some where up in the mountains of Vir ginia-Frank Kemp busy as a bee lining up the District Softball Tour nament—the guy really has worked hard this season and deserves e lot of credit.—Aside to Dick Mar tin of Minnesott—when you give them the "primrose” treatment— Boy! The President, Mrs. A. W. Oakes, called the meeting to order. Miss Viola Nethery gave the devotionals and made a short, but very inter esting talk along the line of her work. The minutes of the last meeting were read and the business was disposed of. The six circles gave good reports. Mrs. Pierce Johnson in a few well chosen words presented Miss Nethery a parting gift from the society. Miss Nethery, who graduated from Scar rett College this summer as a dea coness, expects to leave this month for Arkansas where she will take up her work as a Missionary and Personals Dr. Robt. Clark and Mrs. Clark are visiting in the home of Ed Clark. Mrs. Black Pierce and children are spending some time in Wades boro. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Murrell are visiting in Morehead City. Margaret Anne Gore has return ed home from Carolina Beach where she attended a house party. Mrs. L. B. Strong and children are spending sometime in Wash ington. Mr. and Mrs. Edmond Carter, Mrs. Marvin Quillen and Miss Hops Taylor spent Sunday at O cean View. Mrs. J. V7. Larkin, Mrs. E. L. A. Carter and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Willey have returned home from Hot Springs, Ark. Mr. and Mrs. Pat Micheal are visiting Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Chapel. SAVED A set of false teeth belonging to a resident of a Scotland Neck dwelling was the only property saved when the building was destroyed by fire. The frame house was occu pied by two Negro families, and caught fire from a defective stove. It was owned by K. C. Josey, Jr., and the loss prac tically was covered by insur ance. After the flames were extin guished a plea was made to James Wilkerson of the Scot land Neck fire department to search for the missing molars. He was sentenced to xx years on the roads, suspended upon pay ment of $50 fine and costs of court, and placed on probation for a period of three years. Anthony Crowell, charged with operating a motor vehicle without a driving license, pleaded guilty and judgement in the case was re served at the time. David Hobbs and Harry Gupton, who appealed from a recorder’s court sentence on charges brought against them after a collision on the Littleton-Roanoke Rapids de tour between their car and one operated by Junius Hester of Hen derson, chauffeur for R. B. Young’s wife on a trip to Emporia, Va., were tried before Judge Harris. Gupton pleaded guilty to hit and run driving and was sentenced to six montns on tne roaas. xiodds entered a plea of guilty to an as sault on Junius Hester, and also assault on Hester with a pocket knife, and was sentenced to nine months on the roads on each charge against him. However, the sentences are to run concurrently. Harry Ellis and Carl Freeman, charged with breaking and enter ing the store of H. R. Hargrove and stealing $3 worth of merchan dise at Weldon, were put on pro bation after pleading guilty to the charge. Each was sentenced to 12 months on the roads, suspended upon payment of court costs, and placed under supervision of the probation officer of the district for three years. ASSISTANT CLERK Mrs Eunice Hedrick Ayers, s niece of Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Tickel of this city, has taken office as ar assistant clerk of court of Forsyth County. She is the first womai ever to hold that office, and was employed in the clerk’s office since December 1, 1930. She also re cently had the distinction of being the first woman to serve on a regu lar jury in Forsythe County Super ior Court. Mrs. Ayers grew up it Lexington and graduated from higl school there. PAINTING The hospital here is getting a new coat of paint on the inside, and painters have already finished with the third floor. Work is now being done on the second floor, and part of the first floor has been painted. Still Nothing In the story about pay in creases for city employees last week it was stated that the city commissioners also got a raise in salary, which was in fact erroneous because the city board members are not paid anything for their services. However, the reporter writ ing the story was correct in one sense—10 per cent of nothing is still nothing, and that’s what the commissioners get although other city employees and of ficials got a 10 per cent in crease in pay.
