Score of the first game was 5-2, and the second was 3-2, in favor of the locals. Russ DeBerry, who pitched both wins over Rocky Mount, and also the win over Wilson for the Ro mancos in the district playoffs, brought in the winning run of the second game with Rocky Mount with his hit in the fifth inning on the Roanoke Mill No. 2 diamond. The Romancos opened the scor ing in their half of the first inning when Chet Allsbrook homered. The locals scored again in the fourth inning when Dick Lee hit one into the spectators of left field, which would have been a homer except for ground rules which allowed him only n double. Lee scored on Hux’s single to make it 2-0 for the Romancos. rtOCKy mount eveneu me score in their half of the fifth inning with two runs. Walker got a hit and scored when Allsbrook errored Pittman’s drive to second base. Then Pittman scored when De Berry threw Coley’s drive wild to first. In the last half of the fifth, Ev erett was safe when Harris made an error, then Everette tagged up on Riggins’ fly to left field and went to second, stole third, and came home on DeBerry’s hit and the game was won for the Roanoke Rapids team. Hits were evenly divided, both teams getting 7. Rocky Mount made two errors, and the Roman cos six. Walker led Rocky Mount at bat with two for three, and Lee got two for three for the Romancos. FIRST GAME The Romancos turned back Rocky Mount in the opening game of the senes at Ledgerwood Park on Thursday night, 5-2. Red Coley, ace Rocky Mount hurler who pitched .both games for his team, had a bad night in the first game on Thursday night and was nicked for nine hits—two of them homers by Sadler and Hux, a triple by Allsbrook and doubles by Hux and Lee. Coley struck out one, but v/alked none. jjeeerry, numancu nurjer, neiu Rocky Mount to three hits and struck out six men. He walked two Rocky Mount batters. The Romancos scored two runs in the fir3t inning when Sadler’s homer brought in Hudson. They scored again in the fourth frame when Hux’s homer brought in Sadler. The final run for the Ro mancos came in the sixth inning when Hux doubled, and Dick Lee doubleu right after him to bring Hux home. Rocky Mount’s runs came in the sixth when Bullock walked and Peters hit a double to bring him home, and Peters scored on B. Inscoe’s hit. Hux of the Romancos was the leading hitter for both teams with three for three in the first game. GET TROPHY After tha game Friday night the district title winners, the Roman cos, were presented with a hand some trophy by First District Com missioner Frank Kemp. Wilson was eliminated in the first district playoffs here on Tues day night of last week when de feated by Rocky Mount, 2-1, and by the Romancos, 1-0. Vacancies In NYA For Boys From Halifax There are a number of vacan cies for boys from Halifax Coun ty in the Vocational Training Centers operated by the National Youth Administration, a non-relief agency, located in Raleigh and Durham. The requirements for entrace at Raleigh ace that youth must have graduated from High School and e seventeen and a half years of age and interested in the courses offered. The Durham Center has no ed ucational requirements. However, the youth must be seventeen and a half years of age, and show ability and aptitude to learn the types of work offered. The courses offered for boys at both centers are as follows: Con struction, photography, machine shop, auto mechanics, agriculture, woodworking, cooking, landscaping, welding, sheet metal work. Under the Defense Program the youths work four hours and have related training classes four hours each day to train them for em ployment in vital defense indus tries which are faced with a cur rent shortage of workers. A full time recreational supervi sor has charge of the recreational program in the Center. Some period during the day is given to each group so that they may en gage in any type of recreational activity they desire. Under recre ational activities are athletic sports, and games, swimming, hik ing, movies, reading, indoor games, and socials. The youths are housed in well constructed dormitories and receive twelve dollars ($12) per month plus room and board. Three meals a day planned, prepared and served under the supervision of a Steward 1 and a Dietation. ENTERTAIN Miss Lillian Jones and Prince Jones entertained at a birthday party Saturday at the home of Mrs. Leonard Wright. Mrs. Ro bert Acree, assisted by Miss Lottie Jones, ■ served ice cream and cake to the following: Atlas Wright, Myrtle Jones, Elsie and Louise Crew, Mrs. Rosa Jones and fami ly, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Wright, Mr. and Mrs. Willie Mosley, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Wright, Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Wright, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Gray, and Mr. and Mrs. Ned Flayed. Grows Cotton John West, Negro tenant on the Jobe Taylor Estate of the Hawkins Chapel section, was proudly displaying a stalk of cotton with 73 bolls and squares on the one stalk here last Fri day. He brought the stalk to the Herald office where the bolls were counted, and stated that he raised about 10 acres of cot ton this year. So far, though, the stalk he brought into the City far eclipses any of the rest of the cotton plants in produc tion of bolls. Mrs. J. B. Moody and companion, ' Thelma Rook, spent the past week at Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Va. ‘ NYA Schedule For Halifax Lanie M. Hayes, representative af the National Youth Administra tion for North Carolina, announced today applications will be received in Halifax County twice each week —at the welfare office in Roanoke Rapids on Wednesday and at the county courthouse at Halifax on.
