~ - -■MBMMMMHWIinBMMWMMWllMMWWIIW Ameche, Grable Return ************ IMPERIAL THEATRE In "Moon Over Miami" Film _ > "Moon Over Miami", with Don Ameche and Betty Grable, returns here for a showing at the Imperial Theatre next Sunday. In techni color, the picture is full of songs, romance, dancing, and comedy. It's the story of fortune-hunting Ameche and Miss Grable, who are thrown together at a resort in their search for a life-pardner to supply them with necessary “spondulix” to enable them to forget about their financial troubles. After meeting each other they are unable to fol low their heads and listen to the siren-song of love which makes their hearts throb at sight of each other. Dan Cupid hits the mark and wins in the end, but he has tough sledding for a while. ****** Gary Cooper and Barbara Stan wyck will be at the Imperial on Monday and Tuesday of next week in “Meet John Doe”, which is re viewed on the opposite page. * * * * * * “Bullets for O’Hara”, which will be shown at the Imperial on next Wednesday, features Joan Perry and Roger Pryor. The story has the girl innocently married to a gangster. Rude awakening comes a year later when husband flees the scene. Pryor, as Detective O’ Hara uses the girl to catch the gangster-husband, Anthony Quinn, as expected. ****** “Naval Academy” is scheduled to be shown at the Imperial on Thurs day and Friday of next week, with Jimmy Lydon, Freddie Bartholo mew and Billy Cook. Bartholo mew, son of a naval family, and Lydon, taken out of a reform school because his father had at tended the Academy, and Cook, a fresh youngster, arrive at a boys’ naval academy as plebes. The three boys bunk together and their troubles and successes com prise the remainder of the story. Needless to say that Lydon turns out to be a first class cadet, after having difficulties, Bartholomew gets in trouble and gets out, and Cook does the same thing. The story does little flag waving, moral izes and emphosizes a number of principles of living that every young man should be guided by. Added on the program will be ****** “March of Time”. On Saturday of next week the Imperial will show Bill Elliott in “Son of Davy Crockett”. Added will be “The Spider Returns”. Singing Class Will Be Here Friday Nigh# Tomorrow night at 8:15 o’clock the Oxford Orphanage Singing Class will give their annual concert in the high school auditorium here, under the directiion of Mrs, Sadie T. Hutchinson. Around fourteen boys and girls A’ill be presented in the group Oi singers, and a new program will be offered this year. Employment Office Wants Applications All workers in the new J. C. Penney store in Roanoke Rapids will be referred through the local office of the N. C. State Employ ment Service, according to an an nouncement from W. G. Cherry, Jr., manager of the Employment Ser vice office. Persons interested in employment with this store are re quested to file applications with Cherry as soon as possible. Applications by mail are not ac ceptable. Each applicant must ap pear for a personal interview. Jobs to be filled at this store include sales clerks, cashiers, stock boys, and a janitor. The local office has orders for many other workers in many dif ferent lines of employment. Cherry stated that the office is now re ceiving more orders for workers than at any other time in its entire history. Other local job openings at present include: orders for salesmen from two different insur ance firms, orders for sales clerks from other local stores, a legal stenographer, a stenographer for the business office of a local in dustrial plant, an office clerk, waitresses, farm hands, laborers for highway construction, and domes tic service workers. All persons seeking employment are urged to register at the Em ployment Service office and to keep their registrations active by regu lar visits to the office. Phillips-Williams Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Williams of this city announce the marriage of their daughter, Louise, to Law rence S. Phillips of San Diego, Calif., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Phillips of Spencer N. C. The wedding took place in Richmond, Va., Tuesday, August 26, in the Chapel of the Centenary Methodist Church officiated by the Rev. R. M. Robertson. The bride, who was unattended, wore a street dress of beige with brown accessories and her flowers were American Beauty Roses showered with lillies of the valley. Immediately following the cere mony, Mrs. F. A. Puster, Jr., cou sin of the bride, entertained at her home 2212 W. Grace Street, Rich mond, Va. Stuclv Club Meets * The Study Club met on Friday afternoon with Mrs. D. C. Clark in the first meeting of the Fall, and Mrs. R. L. Towe, the new president for this year gave a very delightful and inspirational talk. After the business session the pro gram followed, the subject for study during the year being, “We Modems”. Mrs. Cranford Hoyle gave a paper on “Modern Women”, using women in defense, both Bri tish and Chinese, to show the mo dern trend. A sweet course was served at the refresment hour. Those enjoying the delightful hos pitality of Mrs. Clark were: Mes dames A. N. Martin, W. A. Thome, A. E. Akers, Cranford Hoyle, H. S. Loy, Daniel Lane, Scott Benton, Claude Cannon, C. A. Wyche, L. W. Clements, Lawrence Stell, R. L. Towe and Miss Susan Holliday. You have charged the Communi ty Chest with the responsibility of— RAISING FUNDS—by organizing one efficient campaign annually to take the place of ten separate agency solicitations. COLLECTING THE MONEY SUBSCRIBED—most of which is pledged in monthly or quarterly in stallments. DISTRIBUTING THE MONEY RAISED—in budgeted amounts a mong the ten agencies according to the need determined by your Budget Committee. In the performance of all these activities, the Community Chest is acting for you individually and for the people of Roanoke Rap ids collectively. That that portion of your in come which you devote to the wel fare of America through these or ganizations be equitably divided, properly accounted for, and con tributing in the greatest possible degree to the welfare of the com munity and the county you have established a Community Chest That your contribution be equit ably divided—you have provided within the Community Chest a Budget Committee of seven mem bers who are appointed by your President with the approval of your Board of Trustees. Mrs. Scott Hasty and son, Dou glas, spent Sunday with her moth er at Bethel. Mr. and Mrs. Mike Faison visited relatives in Tarboro last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Grover Pitman were visitors in Whitakers last week end. Mrs. C. W. Moore has returned to her home in Spartanburg, S. C., after spending some time here with her son, Charlie Moore.
