ELIZABETH CITY DEFEATS LOCALS CONFERENCE GAME - *1 Yellow Jax Lose Last Friday, 6-0 The Roanoke Rapids High School Yellow Jackets journeyed to Eliza beth City last Friday afternoon for their first conference football game of the season ,and lost 6-0. Elizabeth City kicked off to the Yellow Jax to get the contest un derway, and Coyt Brown returned the kick to midfield where the lo cals were held for three running plays. Billy Neil then kicked a nice one to Elizabeth City’s six-yard line where Jim Brinson, Elizabeth City safety man, was immediately downed. The ball then see-sawed back and fourth on the field during the remaining minutes of the first quarter. Soon after the second period start ed the Jackets started charging and plunging to make several successive first downs and reach Elizabeth City’s twelve-yard line. Then three bad snaps from center held the Jackets for no gain. On the fourth down D. J. Jenkins passed to Clem ents, which was intercepted by Brinson who ran the ball back to his own twenty-yard line. Then E lizabeth City’s running attack got underway and carried the team to mid-field. Paul Morris, substitute tailback, then threw a long pass to Brinson on the Jackets’ thirty, and Brinson galloped the rest of the way for a touchdown. The half ended with the ball in possession of the locals deep in Elizabeth City’s territory. During the half the Elizabeth City band paraded on the field. Tmiia kicked off deeD into Eliza beth City territory to open the sec ond half. After being held to three downs, Elizabeth City kicked out of bounds on their twenty-yard line. From that point the Jackets took the ball to the five-yard line, but on a fumble occurred which was re covered by Joe White for Elizabeth City, and that team promptly kick ed out of danger. During the fourth period the ball was in each team’s possession a bout the same length of time, and neither team was able to gain much ground. The outstanding players for Eliz abeth City were Brinson, left half back, and Morris, right halfback. Coyt Brown, left halfback, and Bil ly Neil, fullback, were best for Roa noke Rapids. Christian Circle Has Meeting The Christian Church Aid Circle number one, met last Monday ev ening in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Williams in Hornertown with twenty-six present, and an of fering of six dollars. Mrs. R. L. Topping is president and Miss Mary Walter Shell is sec retary. Almost all present took part in the discussions which were held by the Rev. T. E. Tomerlin. The meeting next Monday night will be held in the church. One meeting in every month is a mis sionary meeting, and the circle has raised quite a sum for missions this year. The Christian Church main tains missionary work in ten for eign fields. After adjournment, Mrs. Wil liams served delicious refreshments and all those present expressed themselves as having spent an en joyable evening. Those present were: Mrs. R. O. Moore received a head in jury when thrown through the windshield of an automobile near Vincent’s Cross Roads last Sunday afternoon about 4 o’clock. P. J. Allen, 16-year-old youth, re ceived abrasions on the head, a front tooth was broken, and he was knocked unconscious in the accident. Both the injured parties were treated at the local hospital, but details of the accident were not available. Teacher Here Is Injured Thomas Reynolds, math teacher at the local high school, knocked out a tooth, broke another one and received a cut through his lower lip in an accident here Sunday af ternoon. It was reported that Reynolds was performing acrobatics on a bar at Webb’s place in South Rosemary when the accident occurred. Two Negroes Bound Over For Robbery John Tyner and Smith Whiteside. Negroes of Littleton, were given a preliminary hearing in the War renton recorder’s court last week on charges of breaking and enter ing a Seaboard Airline Railway freight car and stealing seven blankets. Tyner, who was arrested at Pe tersburg, Va., by officers there up on information furnished them by Chief of Police J. W. Harvey of Littleton, implicated Whiteside in the robbery when he was brought back to Littleton. It was reported here that both Negroes were bound over to Su perior Court at Warrenton, as the robbery took place on the Warren County side of Littleton. Four of the seven blankets were recovered by officers, and the ar ticles were all the merchandise missed from the freight car after the robbery. Chief Harvey of Littleton was assisted in the investigation by H. H. Salmon, night officer of that city. LOCAL MAN IS INJURED Robert Howell, overseer at the Roanoke Mill No. 2, was injured over the week end. It was report ed that the local man was hurt in an automobile accident, but details were not available. It is under stood that his injuries are not ser ious. Cobb - Whitby Mr. and Mrs. James Howard Whitby announce the marriage of their daughter, Frances Aldene, to Mr. Henry Lassiter Cobb. The wedding took place in the Pente costal Holiness Church, Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, Saturday night, October 11, 1941, at 8:00 o’ clock p.m. The Reverend S. A. Fann, pastor of the church, performed the cere mony. The bride was attractively dress ed in soldier blue with black acces sories. Her corsage was sweetheart roses.
