CITY IS SEEKING PROJECT Underpass At Junction Considered The city board of commission ers in regular session Tuesday afternoon took the first step to eliminate hazards at the Junction railroad crossing by authorizing Masslich and Mitchell, bond at torneys, to handle an election and issuance of bonds necessary to raise city funds for building an underpass at the crossing. A special fund is maintained by the Federal government for the elimination of grade cross ings, and the work is done by the State with cities and towns furn ishing the right of way and dam ages. It has been estimated by High- j way Department engineers, who j made a survey, that the cost of I furnishing a right-of-way and damages for an underpass at the Junction will not exceed $16,000. Highway Commissioner Carroll L. Wilson of the First Division states that the project will cost approx imately $150,000, and the federal government will supplement the $16,000 furnished by the city. Elimination of the Junction crossing has been considered here for several years, and the project is not yet certain. The crossing is considered one of the most dangerous spots for motorists in this section, and since an under pass is considered necessary to remedy the situation the matter will be decided by Roanoke Rap ids citizens in a special referendum on the issuance of $16,000 worth of bonds. No date for the referendum has been set, as the matter has just been authorized by the city board and put into the hands of the bond attorneys. At the same time, it is believed, the citizens of Roanoke Rapids will also be asked to vote on the is suance of bonds totaling $12,000 for the city cemetery project. The board of commissioners has ap proved the purchase of a number of acres from the T. Lee Whitak er estate for a cemetery, and funds must be raised for buying the land (Continued on Page 12, Sec.
