Navy Ss Relaxing Physical Standards For Enlistments - * - 9 “The United States is at war and the need for men in America’s fighting Navy is urgent,” today asserted Lt.-Comdr. McFarland W. Wood, officer-in-charge of Navy recruiting in the Carolinas. “Carolinians have always been foremost in defending this coun try in time of war and I am sure the people of these two Southern states will not fail to respond now,” he declared. “During all the wars in Ameri ca’s history, the men in North Carolina and South Carolina have joined the colors to fight off at tackers, and a quick, large muster of recruits is expected from the Carolinas to help defend the na tion in this time of crisis. “The Navy is relaxing its phy sical standards to enlist men be tween 17 and 49 years of age in the regular Navy or Naval Re serve. Men with physical defects will be accepted if the defects can be corrected after entrance into service. Applicants who have been previous physical rejections ^ or who think they might be re- ^ jected are asked to contact their ‘ nearest recruiting station. “All active men between the 1 ages of 17 and 49 may now take a definite step toward defending America by applying at Navy re cruiting stations in North Caro lina at Raleigh, Charlotte, Greens boro, Salisbury, Asheville, New Bern, Wilmington, or in South Carolina at Columbia, Spartanburg, Greenville, Florence, Charleston. The Raleigh recruiting station and the 11 sub-stations over North and South Carolina have gone on full war-time footing, with all recruiters being placed on 24-hour call. Local Girl Is Presented In Voice Recital Miss Edith Bugg, soprano, will be presented in a voice recital on Monday evening, December 15, at 8 o’clock, as the first of a number of graduate recitals to be given at Fiora Macdonald College during the winter and spring. Miss Bugg is the daughter of Mrs, Nannie C. Bugg and the late Hugh H. Bugg, of Roanoke Rap- ] ids, and will receive her B. M. De- i gree in May. She is majoring in 1 a: it it wa: it it it w vt -a voice and public school music, and is the voice pupil of Miss Estelle Louise Cooney. Grace Withers of Spencer, a piano graduate of this year, will accompany her at the piano. During her four years at Flora Macdonald, while her interests have centered chiefly in the mu sical life of the college, she has taken part in various other phases of student activities. She has been a member of the Zetesian Literary Society since entering college in 1938, also a member of the college glee club, the student music club, and the dramatic club all four years, and of the college sextette for the past three years. She is this year a member of the Student Volunteers. Active also on the athletic field, she was a member of the hockey team in her freshman and sopho more years. She has held a num ber of offices during her life at FMC, including treasurer of the music club and prayer band leader. In her junior year, Miss Bugg ivas presented in junior voice and piano recitals, and also when she .vas a junior, she was a member )f the group of Flora Macdonald ?irls whose beautiful performances >f the Highland Fling and other Scottish dances were so popular a eature in the three weeks’ run of 3aul Green’s ‘‘Highland Call” in Fayetteville. Miss Bugg has a lovely soprano 'oice, which has been much in de- < nand in local churches and civic ] iffairs, as well as in many towns < hroughout the state. Boy Scouts To Form Emergency Service Units The National Council of the Boy Scouts of America has issued a call for the formation of Boy Scout “emergency service units”, National Representative of the East Carolina Council W. H. Pru den of this city announced today. "To do this,” Pruden said, "we must have back into the troops the older boys, and all over 15 years of age are required to re port back to their troops as early as possible. If their troop is not in force, they are asked to report to the nearest troop.” This appeal is made to the Hal ifax District of the East Carolina Council, Boy Scouts of America, which is composed of Weldon, Halifax, Enfield, Scotland Neck, Rich Square, Jackson, Seaboard wd Roanoke Rapids.
