Staff Photograph CHASE IS TIRE OFFICIAL State Defense Director Appoints Local Man Tire Co-Ordinator J. T. Chase of Roanoke Rapids was today appointed County Ad ministrator for Tire Rationing by State Civilian Defense Chairman Ted Johnson of Raleigh. In his new duties, Mr. Chase will have charge of rationing the tires to the three County Boards and will act as judge in all appeal and borderline cases. Immediately after announcement of the appointment was made by County Defense Chairman A. L. Hux with whom State Chairman Johnson had been in contact today, Mr. Chase tendered his resignation as chairman and member of Local Tire Rationing Board No. 1. His successor to this board will be named by Governor J. M. Brough ton upon the recommendation of A. L. Hux, J. Waldo Whittaker and Julian R. Allsbrook, who com prise the nominating committee in such cases. It was the decision of the State office that one man in the county should have the re sponsibility for the rationing to be (Continued on Page 8, Sec. A) CITY TO VOTE ON BONDS Roanoke Rapids voters will go to the polls on Tuesday, January 27th,- to decide on two important issues affecting the future welfare of the city. On that day a special election will be held and the ques tion submitted to the voters as to whether they will approve the is suance of bonds in the amount of $16,000. to finance the proposed underpass at the Seaboard Airline Railway tracks, and bonds in the amount of $12,000. for purchasing land and improving same for cem etery purposes. The issuing of the bonds has been formally approved by the Local Government Commission. The election will be held from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on January 27th. The polling place for the North Ward section will be at 200 Roa noke Avenue, and for the South Ward section at the Rosemary Graded School Building. The regular registration book for city elections will be used. Registration books were opened January 3rd, for those who are not registered and shall remain open until Saturday, January 27th. The registration books are at the Municipal Building, and will be held open all day next Saturday at the regular polling place. HERE FOR CIVILIAN DEFENSE Although last Saturday’s regis tration of local men and women for civilian defense was rather dis appointing, the reason for the small number registering was at tributed to the bad weather con ditions and the fact that many people were working on that day, by C. W. Davis, who is director of Volunteer Service and Public In formation for the Committee on Civil Protection. Some 750 people registered dur ing the day, and Mr. Davis ex plained that they would need per haps that many more, but a con certed effort is being made to have additional residents register and he was highly hopeful of reach ing his quota within a few days. Mr. Davis explained there had been numerous calls this week for registration cards, and that in or der that all adults might have the opportunity to register the cards had been placed at the Rosemary Drug Company and the Roanoke (Continued on Page 8, Sec. A) Daughter 1812 Mrs. Ann Morecock Russell of Halifax County who just celebrated 90th birthday. She is the daughter of Edward Morecock who fought in the War of 1812 and is one of less than four such in the world. (See story inside)
