TSSSgSSSf Latin-Americans Guests Of Club At Yearly Affair Dr. J. Cordia Lyons, Secretary of the Spanish-American summer school at the University of North Carolina, was the principal speak er at the annual Ladies Night ban quet of the Roanoke Rapids Ki wanis Club on Thursday night The annual affair was held in the social rooms of the Junior-Senior high school. Also appearing on the program were three residents and natives of Chile, who are attending the school at the University. They were Senorita Eliana Ross Gibson, librarian of the Chilian-British Cultural Institute, and a nurse in the Chilian Red Cross; Senorita Elena Walker Dial, a nurse with the Chilian Red Cross; and Ivan de la Carrera, a student at Cath olic University, in Santiago, Chile. Dr. Lyons spoke on Inter-Ameri can relations, and told the gath ering of the efforts being made by this government to esiauusu maintain brotherly relations be tween the United States and South American countries. Dr. Ly ons interviewed the three students on topics of interest, including their impressions of American customs, their school work and other subjects. Present for the occasion were a number of visitors, including pres idents of all civic clubs in the city and their wives. Wives and lady friends of the Kiwanians were present for the annual occasion. About 115 were present. William Medlin, president of the Kiwanis Club, presided over the banquet, and Rev. Lawrence Stell, pastor of the Presbyterian church welcomed the guests. The response for the ladies was given by Mrs H. S. Loy. Rev. Mr. Stell alsc introduced Dr. Lyons to the audi ence. High School Boys Can Join Navy The U. S. Navy has announcec another opportunity for Norti Carolina youths to serve theii country and at the same time pre pare themselves for future civiliai work. High school and college student: between the ages of 17 and 19 inclusive, can now enlist in a nev Naval Reserve group and will no be called to active duty until thi completion of their current schoo year if they so desire. The students will enroll in th< Navy’s V-l class, a general ser vice branch of the reserve, anc when they become enrolled, the; will not be subject to the draft. Naval authorities have declarec the new plan offers opportunity: that have never been equalled fo: students in American schools anc colleges. Besides being patriotically en rolled in the world’s hardest fight ing navy, each young man who i; accepted will be furnished foot and lodging and initial uniform; while on active duty. Pay wil start with the base amount foi seamen and will be increased a; the man advances in ratings. Enrollment in the class also of fers youths the opportunity of ob taining free $1,500-worth of train ing in any of 45 trades or voca tions. A physical fitness program will develop healthier men. The periods of enrollment are two, three or four years, but those enlisting will be required to serve only throughout the duration of the war. Not unless the nation’s military situation necessitates the calling of the men, will any one enrolling now be required to re port for duty before the school year is ended. Further information about the 'class can be obtained from Navy Recruiting Stations in North Car olina at Raleigh, Charlotte, Salis bury, Greensboro, Asheville and New Bern; in South Carolina at Columbia and Charleston; in Geo rgia at Macon, Atlanta, and Sav annah; and in Florida at Jackson ville, Tampa and Miami. C., and Mrs. S. B. Fowler from this community spent Tues day in Hollister with Mrs. Billy Mabry. Myrick, star route mail carrier of Littleton and Roa noke Rapids, is rapidly receiving recognition as a songwriter, ac cording to word reaching here from New York. The local man has two song poems appearing in the forthcom ing volume, “Outstanding Song Poems and Lyricists”, being re leased soon by the Exposition Press, of New York. Recently he had several poems published in “Book of 1941 Modern Poetry”, published by Avon House, New York City. The two poems published by the Exposition Press are entitled “Our Moon” and “Love Dream In Caro lina”.
