Patterson Recreation By MARGARET BUTLER_ Last Saturday night’s Bingo par ty uxis a bigger success than ever. The crowd was larger, the prizes better and everyone had a much better time than usual. It’s near ing the final games which will probaby be played off before next week. I have never seen a better bunch of card players anywhere and if you could see the way they are finishing up the games with such a close score, well, you would a gree with me. J. W. Crickmore and Herman "Snap” Britton, are in the lead so far and those boys are tops when it comes to playing cards. Fanney, Casper, Glasgow and Duncan are not bad either and they are still in the game. Boys, next week will tell who the champs are and then you may journey over to the Rosemary Recreation Club and meet with some of their players. I have heard from Frank Everett that he can pick a very good team of players from Rosemary. Mr. Hall from Patterson says the same thing. Well, sounds ike the meet of setback playing from the two sides of town will be all right. Frank, all you have to do Is name the date. "Patterson is ready”. A card -was received from "Bpot* Hutchinson at the Recreation Club this week. Bpot, once the life of the club, is now a soldier at Fort Taylor, Key West, Fla., Co. H 155th Infantry. Bpot was one of the best softball payers that Pat terson has ever had and he played that old hot comer like no ont else could. The boys from Patter son sure wiU miss seeing him on third base this year but they all know that he really was a swell teammate and ball player. Bpot sends his best wishes to all his friends and he hopes to hear from them very soon. He also misses all his friends and wants hem to write to him. A meeting of all boys that are Interested in playing softball this spring, will be called very soon. All the old players tciU be urged to attend and any new players will be welcomed. The purpose of this meeting will be to arouse the interest of the players and make plans for the coming season. Mr. Hall win take charge of the meeting and if you are a softball player or if you want to play, be sure and attend the meeting. Watch the bulletin board for the time of the meeting. Do you have friends away and in the Army? I expect that we ill do. A letter or even a card will be very much appreciated from home or from a friend. Let’s Help all the boys who have gone nto the service, and make them sheerful by writing to them. They leserve to have just a little of sur time that it will take to write, jo be sure and let’s write to our soys who are away. Let them mow that they still have someone hat remembers. Fine Arts Dept. Monthly Meeting The February meeting of the Fine Arts Department of the Roa loke Rapids Woman’s Club was leld Monday afternoon, February 1, at the home of Mrs. Leon Wal ters. The meeting was called to >rder by Mrs. E. H. Graves, pres ident, who conducted a short bus iness meeting after which Mrs. Scott Benton gave the minutes of the last meeting and called the roll. Mrs. T. J. Alford, Program chairman, introduced Mrs. Gordon Berkstresser who spoke interest ingly and authoritatively on the preparations being made for Air Raids in the large cities. Mrs. Berkstresser has just returned from an extended stay in New York city and has had an oppor tunity to observe these prepara tions first hand. The main part of the program was given over to a paper preparec and read by Mrs. Daniel Lane on the Simmons Company, ir which she discussed the back ground of the company, which ii now one of the largest and mos important “family” companies ir this country, and which was found ed seventy-one years ago b; Zalmon G. Simmons. The presi dency of the company has passec from the first Simmons to hii son and now to his grandson, an< many of the company employed have been with them for twent; or more years.
