REGISTRARS NAMED TO ASSIST WITH 3rd DRAFT MONDAY - * Volunteers Will Meet On Friday For Instructions W. O. Thompson has been named Chief Registrar to super vise the registration of all men in the Roanoke Rapids area between the ages of 20 and 45, T. W. Mullen, chairman of local board No. 1, announced this week. The registration will be held through out the nation on February 16. Mr. Thompson will work direct ly through the local board and will supervise the work of more than sixty registrars and workers who will assist in the registration here on Monday of next week, ac cording to Mr. Mullen. In the meantime all of the ap pointed registrars will meet in the court room of the municipal building here on Friday night at 7:30 to receive their instructions for conducting the registration from members of the local board. Similar meetings will be held over the week-end for registrars who are to work at the remaining two places of registration, it was stat ed. In Roanoke Rapids township the registration will be held at the new Armory building in the city. In Weldon township, the registra tion will be held at the community building, and in Faucette’s town ship and that part of Littleton which is in Halifax county, the registration will be held in Ken yon’s old store, Littleton. Men between the ages of 20 and 45 will register. If a man has reached his 20th birthday on or before December 31, 1941, it is re quired to register, and those who have not reached their 45th birth day before the registration date, February 16, are also required to sign their names on the dotted line. War On Stray Dogs Starts In City Monday Chief of Police H. E. Dobbins made the announcement on orders from Mayor Kelly Jen kins and the city council, which is showing concern over the fact that the town of Littleton, just west of here, is now under quarantine as a result of three dogs going mad there during the past week. One child was badly bitten by one of the rabid dogs and is now under going Pasteur treatment. The police chief stated that Roa noke Rapids was cooperating in every way with the county health department in eliminating any menace that may be confronting the city and county. “Any dogs that are found run ning at large after noon Monday February 16, and not wearing a tag showing that such dog has been inoculated against rabies in the past 12 months will be travel ling at his own risk,” Dobbins said All police officers have been in structed to be on the watch foi stray dogs and those which do nol carry an anti-rabies tag on theii collar will be destroyed. ! Rites Held For L. R. Britton L. R. Britton, age 41, died on January 25 at 8 o’clock in Duke Hospital, Durham, after a short illness. Funeral services were held at his home on Monday with Rev. Ike Dickens, pastor of the Roanoke Rapids Pentecostal Holiness Church, in charge of the last rites. Burial followed in the Roanoke Rapids cemetery. Surviving are his wife, six chil dren, four sisters and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Britton of Conway. Crutchfield Is Called To Active Duty In Army lst-Lt. Eugene B. Crutchfield, son of Mrs. T. T. Shell of Roanoke Rapids, has been called to active duty with the United States Army and is now stationed at Fort Dte, N. J., it has been learned here. Lt. Crutchfield is a graduate of North Carolina State College in the class of 1933 and has been connected with the Virginia Elec tric and Power Company, with headquarters in Richmond, Va. He married Miss Eugenia John son of Winston-Salem and they; have a son, age 2.
