AIR MARKERS TO BE DESTROYED IN HALIFAX AREA CAA Moves To Destroy Guides For The Enemy A. Leonidas Hux, chairman of the County Civilian Defense Com mittee, said yesterday that the Civil Aeronautics Administration ».nd the War Department had requested that all existing air markers that might serve to guide memy planes to points in the }tate must be destroyed or obliter ated at once, and chairman Hux has advised A. N. Martin of Roa noke Rapids, a member of the County Defense Council, to deter mine the location of all markers •jid markings now existing in and ♦.round Roanoke Rapids. Markers in question are those that may have been erected in the oast by WPA workmen, and a large number of other markings which may be effective as identi fication signals, whether intended for air service use or not.. . Chairman Hux said that in ma ly places water tanks, factory buildings and other structures jarrying lettering which identi fies the city in which such mark ers are located would be useful to enemy planes in serving as a 'Juide to more important objec tives. Mayor Kelly Jenkins and Chief >f Police H. E. Dobbins were re quested by Chairman Hux to work With Martin on the location and obliteration of all markings that might be seen from the air and that might identify Roanoke Rap ids. Hux said that the North Carolina wing of the Civil Air Pa trol has volunteered to check the irea for markings from the air is soon as the survey has been .ompleted and all known markings lone away with. The request by the Civil Aero nautics Authority included all markers within a radius of 150 tfiiles of the Atlantic and Pacific j coasts. The request also made it | imperative that no new markers ] 5e constructed in the continental United States until further notice. “It will be a pretty difficult task to determine what markings or markers are in or near Roanoke Rapids.” Chairman Hux said, “e speciaily those painted on roofs Of buildings. Lorenza Lewis, white, of Beau fort, speeding, judgment suspend ed on payment of the costs and not to drive for 30 days. Walter Davis, Samuel Davis and Sim Lyon, colored of Enfield, driving without license, prayer for judgment continued on payment of the costs and on condition neither of them operate a motor vehicle for four months and then only if they have obtained opera tor’s license. Henry Bailey, colored of Enfield, reckless driving, judgment sus pended on payment of the costs, operator’s license revoked for eight months. Charlie McCarthy And Edgar Bergen Coining To Levon Edgar Bergen and his famous "Charlie McCarthy” are offered in their newest production “Look Who’s Laughing”, which will be shown next Sunday and Monday at the Levon Theatre in Weldon. Mary Astor and Humphrey Bo gart are co-starred in the film “Maltese Falsom” for the Tuesday and Wednesday feature film at the Levon. Thursday and Fridays’ program brings Johnny Downs and Jane Fraze as a team in the new re lease “Moonlight In Hawaii”. N. Riddle, prominent Northampton lawyer and mayor of Jackson, was the chief speaker at the Seaboard Woman’s Club, which met in the home of Mrs. H. R. Harris, Tuesday night, Febru ary 10.
