AIR MARKERS TO
BE DESTROYED
IN HALIFAX AREA
CAA Moves To
Destroy Guides
For The Enemy
A. Leonidas Hux, chairman of
the County Civilian Defense Com
mittee, said yesterday that the
Civil Aeronautics Administration
».nd the War Department had
requested that all existing air
markers that might serve to guide
memy planes to points in the
}tate must be destroyed or obliter
ated at once, and chairman Hux
has advised A. N. Martin of Roa
noke Rapids, a member of the
County Defense Council, to deter
mine the location of all markers
•jid markings now existing in and
♦.round Roanoke Rapids.
Markers in question are those
that may have been erected in the
oast by WPA workmen, and a
large number of other markings
which may be effective as identi
fication signals, whether intended
for air service use or not..
. Chairman Hux said that in ma
ly places water tanks, factory
buildings and other structures
jarrying lettering which identi
fies the city in which such mark
ers are located would be useful to
enemy planes in serving as a
'Juide to more important objec
tives.
Mayor Kelly Jenkins and Chief
>f Police H. E. Dobbins were re
quested by Chairman Hux to work
With Martin on the location and
obliteration of all markings that
might be seen from the air and
that might identify Roanoke Rap
ids. Hux said that the North
Carolina wing of the Civil Air Pa
trol has volunteered to check the
irea for markings from the air
is soon as the survey has been
.ompleted and all known markings
lone away with.
The request by the Civil Aero
nautics Authority included all
markers within a radius of 150
tfiiles of the Atlantic and Pacific j
coasts. The request also made it |
imperative that no new markers ]
5e constructed in the continental
United States until further notice.
“It will be a pretty difficult task
to determine what markings or
markers are in or near Roanoke
Rapids.” Chairman Hux said, “e
speciaily those painted on roofs
Of buildings. With this in mind,
C kindly ask that thorough coop
eration of the people-at-large be
given Mr. Martin and city offi-!
oials by reporting any markers or j
markings within the area covered
by Roanoke Rapids. People liv
ing in the outlying sections of the
;ounty are also urged to cooperate
by reporting existing markers that
might be of aid to the enemy
ihould enemy planes fly over the
trea,”
