Weldon Folk Mystified By Earth Fire Smol'e has been pouring from holes in the community center grounds in Weldon for the past two weeks from what hundreds of visitors have termed an “underground fire”. Approxi mately 400 square feet of earth appears to be heated from be low, according to information reaching here. The ground in certain places has sunk two feet, and two large trees, their roots burned into, have toppled over. A barbecue pit near the center of the plot has fallen apart due to the heat and unstable foundation. The most plausible explana tion offered for the “under ground fire” is that years ago cinders and partly burned coal from an oil mill located on the spot were dumped into a huge pile, which has since been level ed and landscaped. Military guards stationed on the bridge across Roanoke Riv er at Weldon have recently used the' community house for headquarters and have kept fire constantly on the barbecue pit. Its constant heat is be lieved to have ignited the cin ders and coal left beneath the ground.
