Co., that Gordon A. Berkstresser Works Manager of Roanoke No. 2 had been elected to the Board oi Directors of Patterson Mills Co and made a Vice President of thal company and had also been mad< a Vice President of Roanoke Mill! Co. of which he was already a director. SALVAGE HEAD Frank S. Kemp, personnel man ager of Roanoke and Patter son Mills Co., has been named chairman of the Roanoke Rapids “Salvage For Victory” cam paign by Mayor Kelly Jenkins, lo cal Civilian Defense Coordinator. Mr. Kemp will preside at a meet ing of local men and women sched uled to be held on Tuesday night of next week when the complete “Salvage For Victory* Committee will be elected and installed. ARMY UNIT TO MAKE CITY HEADQUARTERS VICTORY BALL AT ARMORY _ Plans for the big “Victory Ball”, scheduled to be held in the new Armory building Friday night under the auspices of the local Auxiliary Police force, a division of the Civilian Defense Corps, were complete today and one of the largest crowds ever to attend a dance here is expected. One of the high-light entertain ment features of the evening, which has been perfected this week by a committee headed by Basil Glover, will be the presenta tion of a home-talent floor show, featuring many of the hit numbers from the recent Kiwanis Minstrel production “Hooray America". The orchestra will add special routines of their own for the floor show, and it is being looked forward to with a great deal of interest by both those who plan to dance as well as spectators. Scheduled to play for the affair is Barry McKinley, one of the na tion’s up and coming young dance bands. McKinley, formerly fea tured on a number of radio net work programs, has what is called (Continued on Page 8, Sec. A) SALVAGE MEETING CALLED Plans for establishing a “Salvage For Victory” committee for Roa noke Rapids and vicinity will be made at a meeting of representa tive citizens of the city on Tues day night in the Municipal Build i ing, Mayor Kelly Jenkins, City ‘ Defense Coordinator, announced today. The meeting will begin promptly at 7:30 o’clock. Mayor Jenkins said that DeLeon Green of Weldon, County Salvage For Victory chairman, would at tend the meeting, and that a full committee to work in the program would be named. The Mayor stated that Frank Kemp had been named by him to act as chairman of the Committee in the city. Representatives of all civic and public organizations in the city have been invited to attend the meeting. Organizations to partici pate are the Parent-Teachers Asso ciations of all schools, the American (Continued on Page 8, Sec. A) -.: - ■ ■ STAR COMING TO CAMPOREE 1 Bobby Feller, above, famous Cleveland Indians “fireball” pitching star, will appear on the second day’s program of the Boy Scout Camporee here on April 17, 18 and 19th. Accompanying Feller will be Sam Chap man, Philadelphia Athletic star wiiom the Athletics refused to sell for a small fortune, and Johnnie Hutchinson, highly touted rookie pitcher for the Detroit Tigers. Governor Broughton will open the Camporee here with an address, and will then lead a mammoth parade through the streets of the city. (For Camporee Details See Page 1, Sec. C) ROTARY LADIES ENTERTAINED It was a gala occasion when local Rotary Club members entertained their ladies in the Blue Room of the Rosemary Cafe last week, and the Herald cameraman caught this scene at one of the tables during the singing of one of the songs. Dr. .Henry Dwire, vice-president of Duke University, was the principal speaker. WILL USE OUR NEW ARMORY The new Roanoke Rapids Arm ory building, constructed since the departure for camp of the local National Guard unit, will be in habited in the near future by some 100 or more soldiers comprising Company D, 30th Engineer Bat talion who are expected to arrive in the city about the middle of this month and barrack here for an indefinite stay. The unit, whose headquarters is at Fort Belvoir, Va., will be com manded by First Lieut. A. T. Dod son, Jr. The company has been stationed in Wilson, with other units of the 30th Engineers, dur ing which time it has done topo graphical work for the Army in areas throughout Eastern Carolina. Captain Charles M. Duke, com manding officer of the 30th, con tacted in Wilson this afternoon, said that members of the Com pany while here would do survey work and making maps of the ter ritory in the vicinity of Roanoke Rapids and that a considerable portion of the work would be done east of the city in the direction of scouana 1N6CA. Captain Duke stated that he did not know at the present time just how many men of the 30th would be sent here, but was sure the figure would run to well over a hundred. He said that their stay here would be for an indefinite period, possibly several months. The soldiers will barrack in the building, using their own camp equipment, portable kitchen and recreation center. More than a dozen huge Army trucks will ac company the unit Advance portions of the Com pany are expected to arrive in the city within the next few days to get the building and grounds in order preparatory to the arrival of the remainder of the contingent. W. P. LAWSON SUFFERS STROKE W. P.
