The recently organized Salvage For Victory Campaign, now un derway throught the nation, was off- to a good start in Roanoke Rapids and vicinity today as a result of a meeting of local citi zens held in the municipal build ing here on Tuesday night, at which time chairmen of the vari ous committees to work in the local campaign were appointed by F. S. Kemp, chairman of the Sal vage For Victory committee here. Appointed to serve in the cam paign was an eight-man executive committee, and seventeen district chairmen who will have charge of the collection of vital scrap material in their districts through out the duration of the war. NEW COMMISSIONER ★ ★ ★ ★ ★★★★ GURLEY RESIGNS ★ ★★★ ★★★★ MARTIN IS APPOINTED Ten Men In County Out For Office The announcement last week of Charles R. Daniel, incumbent, and A. M. Atkinson, Enfield man, as candidates for the office of Judge of Recorder’s Court, brought the number of candidates who have officially announced for county of fices in the May 30th primary to ten, leaving a number of offices which are to be filled, uncontest ed to date as the Herald went to press. Filing time for county of fices closes at six o’clock on Sat urday afternoon, April 18th. Atkinson, who was Mayor of Enfield for four years, is the latest candidate in the field. Dan iel, the incumbent Judge of the Recorders court, is from Weldon. Offices of County Commissi oners, County Coroner, members of the County Board of Educa tion, and Solicitor of Recorder’s court, all are to be filled at the November elections, with nomina tions being made in the May 30th primary. To date no announce ments have been made for any of these offices. Announcements to date include the following: For Clerk of Superior Court: A. Leonidas Hux, incumbent, and Sam A. Dunn of Enfield. For Sheriff: H. A. House, in cumbent, P. C. Luter and S. M. Thompson, all of Roanoke Rapids. For the Senate: E. L. Travis of Halifax, incumbent, and Julian Allsbrook of Roanoke Rapids. For Judge of Recorders Court: Chas. R. Daniel, incumbent, and A. M. Atkinson, of Enfield. For Representative: B. B. Ever-i ette of Palmyra, unopposed. Appointed To City Board Alfred Martin, above, a former city commissioner, has been ap pointed by the Board of Commis sioners to serve until May 30th in the post left vacant by the resigna tion of Commissioner J. B. Gurley who has taken up active duty with the United States Army. Martin was one of the members of the first Board of Commissioners to serve the city after the incorporation of Roanoke Rapids with Rosemary. Britton Goes To Duke Hospital Rufus Britton, secretary of the Roanoke Rapids fire department and well known here, is a patient in Duke Hospital, Durham, where tie underwent an operation today (Thursday) as a result of a head ailment with which he has been suffering for some time. No word has been received from the hospital since the operation. £ _ Local Druggist To Serve Until Next Election J. B. Gurley, city commissioner here since June 1939 and who was recently ordered to active duty with the United States Army, last week tendered his resignation to the Mayor and Board of Commis sioners. Acting on the matter at the regular monthly meeting of the Board on Tuesday, the commis sioners accepted the resignation with regret and immediately ap pointed Alfred Martin, local drug gist and former commissioner, to serve until the May 30th election, at which time the post will be filled for the remainder of the term. The text of Gurley’s resignation reads as follows : “I have recently been called to active duty with the armed forces of the United States. This will, of course, necessitate an indefinite absence and make impossible the performance of my duties as a member of the city council. “I therefore ask that you ac cept my resignation as a commis sioner of the city of Roanoke Rap ids, effective April 1st. “It is with sincere regret that I sever my connections with the Board, since my association with its members personally, and with the other officials and employees of the city have been to me most pleasant and helpful”. The Board passed a resolution expressing regret at Gurley’s re signation from the Board, but at the same time commended him as one who is doing his part in the services of his country. Mo j tion was made by Commissioner M. D. Collier, and seconded by V. E. McDowell, that the city clerk be instructed to write a letter to j the former commissioner accept ' (Continued on Page 12, Sec.
