1The City Softball League will open its schedule on Monday night, May 18th, with Roanoke No. 1 and Patterson clashing at Roanoke No. 2 field. On Tuesday night Company D Engineers will lock horns with Halifax Paper at Patterson field. Then on Wednes day night Rosemary Romancos and Roanoke No. 2 will start their feud all over again. This setup will give each field a big opening night. —o— The league has a nice group of umpires to work the schedule headed by Mac Outland, former Romanco star, who heads the um pires’ organization. They have Vester Finch, semi-pro baseball star; Pete Ferrell, former Roa noke Mills softballer, and Jesse Sewell, Romanco Bee team player of last year. The umpires plan to take the A.S.A. umpires’ examina tion next week and join the A mcrican softball umpires associa tion so that they will be avail able for all tournament play in the state. All umpires will be dressed in official umpires’ dress. Mac Outland deserves a lot of credit for insisting that the um pires' organization be official all the way. —o— Lieutenant Bob Moore and Lieu tenant- Graham Waite deserve a lot of credit for the time and work they are putting in the city league organization and setup. After their commanding officer, Lieutenant Dodson, who, inciden tally, is one helluva good egg, okayed Company D to put a team in the city league, well! Moore and Waite really “dug in and went to town". To show the high esteem in which both are held by local softballers, Moore is vice president of the league and Waite is secretary and treasurer. Both are more than doing their part to make the league a success. —o— "Dark horses” of the City Soft ball League will probably be Coach Paul Harris and his Roa noke No. 1 “Riversiders”. You haven’t heard much about this Roanoke No. 1 team, but with two capable hurlers like "King Carl” Ray and "Red” Jones, they are going to be in the thick of the fight before the season it out. Another team that no one seems to notice is the Halifax Paper Corp. A bad smell comes from down thei'e every now and then, but it’s not their softball team. They have two very good pitchers in “Ace” Carlyslc and Loyd Neth ercutt, while Frank Everett is not far behind. Watch them ivhen the chips are down. —o— SEVERAL MEMBERS OF THE ROMANCO SOFTBALL TEAM WOULD DO WELL TO REMEM BER THE SPIRIT AND FIGHT ALWAYS DISPLAYED, . . . ES PECIALLY WHEN THE GOING GOT TOUGH ... You are invited to attend one of the finest square dances held in this section. Men in the armed forces of the United State mil find a welcome sign on the door. —o— “Chippy” Simms, flashy short stop on the Romancos, is playing the best softball of his career. The short and stumpy one is a ball of fire at the plate and afield. In fact, the whole infield is throwing the ball around and hustling in mid-season form. Coach Doug Worsham has Capt. “Lefty” Everett at first, the vet eran Chet Allsbrook at second, and old reliable Jimmy Hudson at third. And they are all better than ever. —o— Pickups N’ Putouts: Scenes from back of the dugout . .
