ROMANCOS TO PLAY ALL-LEAGUE TEAM SATURDAY NIGHT Moore And Hux To Lead Stars In USO Fracas The teams of the City Softball League will sponsor an All-Star game between the league-leading Rosemary Romancos and a team composed of players chosen from the other five teams in the league. The game (or games as is yet to be decided) will be played at Ledgerwood Park Saturday night at 8:30 o'clock. The entire pro ceeds of the contest will be do nated to the United Service Or ganizations. The members of the all-star squad had not been chosen at the time that this article was written but a meeting was to be held to decide upon the number of games, admission price and members of the squad. The men to guide the stars through the game Saturday night have already been chosen. Lieut. Bob Moore of the Co. “D" Engineer team has been chosen as manager and t——-—— Owen “Speed” Hux of the Roa noke No. 2 Red Raiders is to be field captain. The contest will in all probabil ity develop into a duel between the slugging of the all-stars and the crack pitching of the Roman cos. Allen, No. 1, c Moore, Eng., scf Rogers, No. 2, Lattimore, Patt., or Jones, No. 1, p Eastern Meet To Have Nine Softball Entrants; Western Has Nineteen - e Roanoke Rapids To Enter Squad In Raleigh Event Nine teams have entered the Eastern Sectional Softball meet to be held in Raleigh beginning Au gust 13. The Western Sectional meet - which will be held in Can ton on the same dates—will have nineteen entrants. Roanoke Rapids, Murfreesboro, Raleigh, Rocky Mount. Goldsboro, Clayton, Fayetteville. Henderson and Fort Bragg are the teams entering the Eastern meet. In the state finals the winner from the East will meet the western winner on the home field of the eastern champion in the first two games. If a third game is needed to decide the payoff it will be played on the home field of the western winner. Plans for the tournament were announced here today by W. G. (Bill) Alligood, state softball com missioner. The State champion will enter a regional meet which will bring to gether the winners from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The winner of this regional meet will then advance to the nationals to be held in De troit beginning September 16. Only twelve regional winners will enter the nationa levent. Last year the local Romancos won the N. C. State championship and went to the finals of the national eliminations where they were de feated by the Bendix Brakes of South Bend, Indiana. The teams that have entered the Western tourney are High Point, Cramerton, Charlotte, Concord, Kannapolis, Shelby, Canton, Gas tonia, Gaston County, Asheville," Waynesville, Mount Holly, Weav erville, Morris Field, 20th Fighter Group of Charlotte, and the Aero cobras of Greensboro. Approximately 1,330 have been registered in the North Carolina Softball Association and the Am ateur Softball Association of A merica, according to F. S. Kemp, secretary and treasurer of the N.C.S.A. City League To Give Engineer Team Stew Sat. The softball teams of the City Softball League will honor the Co. “D" Engineers softball team with an old-fashioned brunswick stew Saturday at Poplar Springs. Ail members of teams of the city league will be present according to Paul Harris, league president. All officials of the city league will be present. Engineers Are Snowed Under By Halifax; 12 to 5 The Halifax Papermen scored a 12 to 5 victory over , the cellar dwelling Co. “D” Engineers Fri day night at Patterson Park. The Engineers outhit the Papermen nine to seven but lost the game on account of errors. Halifax got off to a quick start by tallying four runs in the first stanza. This victory by the Paper Boys enabled them to gain a full game on the second-place Red Raiders who dropped a contest to the Roman cos. Raider Protested Game To Be Played That protested contest between the Roanoke No. 2 Red Raiders and the Halifax Papermen has been reconsidered by the protest board and is to be played again. The entire game is not to be play ed over but the game will be con tinued from the point where the protested decision was made. The protest was entered by Roanoke No. 2 when base-runner Mac Out land collided with Shortstop Rob ert Rogers when he was attempt ing to field a ground ball. Um pire Fred Mills failed to call Out land out and Manager “Speed” Hux of the Raiders protested the game. Kaiaers lighten Grip On 2nd Spot; Beat Halifax, 6-2 The Roanoke No. 2 Red Raiders tightened their hold on second place Monday night when they defeated the Halifax Papermen by the score of 6 to 2. Knox Rogers limited the Papermen to two hits as his mates got four off Carlisle, Halifax hurler. The Redmen scor ed three in the first when a freak two-base hit drove two runs across the plate. The Papermen scored their two runs when Mac Outland doubled two men home. Halifax Splits Twin Bill With Richmond Clubs Saturday Nite -- I Top Jacob-Levy; Lose To DuPont The Halifax Paper club journey ed over to Richmond Friday night to take on two or Hie capitol city’s leading teams. In the first contest the Papermen defeated the league-leading Jacob and Levy team by the score of 3 to 1. Jacob and Levy outhit the Paper millers four to two but could not bunch their safeties together in the right places. The Richmond ers scored their lone run in the fifth off two hits and led 1 to 0 -r-.. ■ .. going into the, seventh inning. In the top of the seventh “Ace" Car lisle won his own game by slam ming out a homer with two men on base. In the second game Lloyd Neth ercutt lost a hard fought contest to Stowe of DuPont by the score of 8 to 6. Batteries (second game): Neth ercutt and Bricklemeyer; Stowe and Cash. __ I 1, Engineers Divide l Doubleheader With Rocky Mount Team Lattimore And Rogers Pitch The Co. “D” Engineers split a doubleheader with the Rocky Mount All-Stars Saturday night at Roanoke No. 2 Park. The Engineers copped the first tilt 4 to 0 behind the two-hit pitching of Knox Rogers, Roanoke No. 2 ace. The Engineer garner ed six hits off “Red” Coley, Rocky Mount hurler, one of them a four bagger by Bittner, the right-field er, in the second with one man on base. Bittner with a homer and Murphy with two doubles for three trips to the plate led the Engineers at bat. Rogers went all the way on the mound for the Engineers while Frank Chmielew ski caught. Coley and Allsbrook hurled for Rocky Mount with Ez - _ zell doing the catching. Score by innings (first game): R H Rocky Mount _ 000 000—0 2 Engineers _ 020 002—4 6 In the second game Allsbrook limited the Engineers to one hit, j a double in the second by Ollie j| Ballard, second-baseman, to win i by the score of 5 to 0. Alvin Lat timore, Patterson Pirate ace, pitched for Co. “D” and the vis itors notched him for five hits. The batteries for Rocky Mount were Allsbrook and Felton, while Lattimore and Chmielewski work ed for the Engineers.
