h mumm hi c mmzmaMsmwmm IMPERIAL ON ITS REGULAR ROUTINE NOW The Imperial Theatre quits op erating as the Royal Theatre (a policy which is adopted every summer in order to make neces sary repairs) as of Sunday of next week, and the usual policy of “first-run films” will be offered patrons of the popular Uptown house. For the Sunday bill they bring back the popular hit “Rio Rita”, with Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. They then revert to their usual policy of first-run films. ****** Monday and Tuesday “Are Hus bands Necessary?” moves uptown for a two-day showing at the Im perial. A preview of this film will be found on the opposite page. Brenda Joyce portrays a philat elist (stamp collector to you) in the film “The Postman Didn’t Ring , wmcn win ue auuwu the Wednesday-only “bargain day” film next week at the Im perial. She explains the joys of stamp collecting while Stanley An drews, as the postal inspector, epitomizes the extremes to which the post office will go to effect delivery of the mails. Andrews is assigned to delivery of a sack of mail which is re covered by the authorities after it had been stolen and missing for 50 years. Miss Joyce, anxious to obtain the valuable stamps on the letters, accompanies him. There are several incidents showing de livery to a Governor of a letter intended for the latter’s father telling how the Governor was mis behaving at school; to a spinster school teacher from a sweetheart who, she believed, had forgotten her,’ but who had really been killed, and the like. ****** Wallace Beery and Marjorie Main are co-starred in the film, “Jackass Mail”, which will have its first showing in the city at the Imperial on next Thursday and Friday. It has been nearly 300 years since anybody doubted that Wal lace Beery owns a talent that large numbers of people want to pay to see displayed on the screen, so this is not time to start doubting it. Rather it’s time to report that whatever it is that they like he does again here in much the same manner. The scene tms ume is uic fornia of 1851 and the jackass mail of the title is a wagon service operated by Miss Main between Sacramento and the towns and diggings not yet tapped by the R.F.D. She also operates a bar in town. Beery comes into her life toy way of setting out to rob her wagon, wins her interest and the job of driving it, then progresses by dint cf her proddings, and those of a boy whose father he has shot dead in self defense, to such an eminence of unwilling vir tue that they name a town after him. There are shootings and fights, holdups and attempted holdups, with forces outside his control giving him a good repute he neither wants nor understands. Humor is, however, the top item in the list of ingredients. ****** Andy Devine and Leo Carrillo co-star in “Unseen Enemy” for the Saturday-only “thriller drama” on next week’s Imperial program.
