BOY SCOUT NEWS What with a District Committee Meeting, a Board of Review, a Troop Charter Presentation, a new Troop Organization meeting, a Staff Conference, and other ac tivities, Scout-minded men in Roa noke Rapid’s have undergone an exceptionally busy week—with more of them coming up. The coming of Autumn always brings a surge of activity in Scouting, while the Summer months are usually fairly slow. The beauty of it all was that, in Roanoke Rapids, there was no Summer Slump; and while other locales were marking time and re laxing our own outfits were mov ing right up to the front in ad vancement, in attendance, in membership. The Roanoke Rapids Rotary Club was host to their own Troop 86 over in Gaston last Tuesday evening. Along with Scoutmasters Vann and Hudson the Scouts en joyed a crackerjack supper fol lowed by, a charter presentation ceremony in the school auditori um. We think this Troop is really going places. Vann and Hudson are in there pitching 100% of the time, and under such lead ership these youngsters are going to carve an enviable niche for themselves in Halifax District Scouting. Keep an eye on South Rosemary, too. Things are beginning to hum over in those parts . . and there’s a young fellow named Wheeler, agricultural teacher at Wm. R. Davie School and 3rd baseman of the Roman cos who has all the earmarks of a top-notch Scout master. Some few days ago this writer had the privilege of meeting and talking with four young British “King” Scouts. “King” Scouts correspond to Eagle rank in A merica. These boys were from four of the most badly bombed sections of England. They had been through the “blitz,” and while we may earnestly prry that our own lads may never have to go through the same ordeal, they nevertheless gave an inspiring picture of what Scouts can, and will, do when the time for action comes. These boys, just normal youngsters like those you see play ing in our own school yards, had aged far beyond their years. They ' had seen things that weren’t nice to see: High explosives and incen diaries bursting all about them: Their own friends and loved ones gone: Their homes and play places destroyed . . but, as Scouts, they had “carried on” . . as mes sengers, as first aiders, as fire watchers, and as assistant ward i ens. Scouts, our motto “BE PRE PARED” means more than ever these days. What about that E i mergency Service Training? It’s good to see Billy Atkinson, !of 144, back in town aagin. Billy : loves and lives Scouting. So does 1 Bill Hawkins, another one of i those Troop 146 “Beavers.” Scoutmaster Rudolph Waters of 142 is planning a swell Fall and Winter program in advance. Ru dolph started the ball rolling the other day with a Treasure Hunt |that stretched over some ten miles d those 142’ers ibs in Halifax i more coming to Cobmasters >u Scouts and Pistrict Com ax and North tie’s Ben Rich ----- ardson ,of Weldon, a splendid Scouter with years of practical Scouting experience. Ben is going to try and visit every Troop in his district this Fall. Roanoke Rapids Scouting extends cordial greetings to the Reverend J. M. Walker, new Presbyterian minister. We sincerely hope that Reverend Walker will make him self thoroughly at home in our ranks and will find an opportunity to take an active part in our Scouting program. Just a thought in closing: “Char acter is what you are in the dark.” St. John's Catholic Church Rev. Peter M. Denges, Pastor 16th Sunday after Pentecost. Sunday Masses, 8 and 10 a.m. Week-day Mass, 7 a.m. Saturday Mass for Children, 8 a.m. Confes sions are heard daily before Mass. Wednesday, Friday and Satur day will be Ember Days of Fast and Abstinence. Apologetics will be taught in Weldon on Sunday evening at 7:30, and Catechism will be im parted in Weldon on Monday at 3:45 p.m. Religious instructions are given in Roanoke Rapids on Friday at 3:30 and at 7:30 p.m., and also on Saturday morning after the 8 o’clock Mass. Holy Mass will be celebrated in Halifax on Thursday morning at 8 o’clock to honor the Stigmata of St. Francis of Assisi. Miss Nannie Gary, of Halifax, and Miss Sudie FitzPatrick, of Crowells Cross Roads, will sponsor a social at the rectory on Tues day at 8 p.m. A handsome door prize will be awarded. Father Denges extends a hearty welcome to the public to attend all Catholic services. Sale of Land for Taxes In compliance with the law and in order to satisfy the collections of 1941 taxes for the Roanoke Rapids Graded Schools and for the City of Roanoke Rapids, I will sell at public auction the property of the following on Monday, September 14, 1942 at 12:00 o’clock noon in front of the Halifax County Courthouse, Halifax, North Carolina.
