ENFIELD MEN ARE SENT TO FORT BRAGG The following white men were sent from Enfield Local Board No. 2, Halifax County, for induction in the army at Fort Bragg, on Thurs day, September 3rd: Ernest Ray Evans, Enfield; John Dee Walton, Enfield; Charles Thomas Van Lan dingham, Scotland Neck; Harry Quail Hudgins, Enfield; William Glen Daniels, Scotland Neck; Thur man Williams, Hobgood; Warren Vance Armstrong, Enfield; Will Raney Hollingsworth, Halifax; Loyde Hobson Little, Littleton; Hoyt Columbus Gurganus, Halifax; Richard Norman Staton, Scotlahd Neck; James Ruffin Lawrence, En field. Those scheduled to leave at this time for Fort Bragg, but who had enlisted recently in the navy were: Thomas Norwood Hale, Scotland Neck; Herman Reid Liles, Little ton; Richard Dillard Bunch, Scot land Neck. Victory Garden Festival Plans Show Progress Plans are still being made for the Victory Garden Harvest Festival to be held at the Woman’s Clubhouse in Halifax on Sept. 24 and 25. Com mittees are working to make the festival a big success. One of the newest developments is to be a Hat Show—hats are to be made from fruits and vegetables and are to be modeled by the young ladies of Halifax. The new Home Demonstration Agents, Miss Florence Oox and Miss Estelle Edwards, are wording with the two clubs which are spon soring the event. Proceeds are to go for the army and navy Belief fund. LITTLETON Miss Dorothy Farmer of Norfolk spent last week-end with her moth er, Mrs. A. P. Farmer. Messrs. Edward Riggan, Sterling Johnston, Billy Edgeton, Ned Long Clark, Luther Collier and Donald Bailey, all of Newport News, Va., visited their parents and friends this week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Billy Perkinson of Newport News motored to their home for the week-end. W. T. Threewitts of Raleigh was here to visit his parents over the week-end. Billy Jones and Mrs. O. L. Currin shopped in Roanoke Rapids on Tuesday afternoon. Misses Evelyn Newsom, Emma Bonney and Doris Hayes spent a few days last week here visiting their relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Crawley of Newport News, Va., spent the week-end here with Mr. Crawley s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Craw ley. Miss Margaret Crawley left Mon day night for Mars Hill College where she will attend college this year. Bobby Jones has taken further studies by attending Wake Forest College. Miss Mary Alex Wells of Wilson is here visiting her cousin, Miss Mary Shields Justis. Raymond Ward and Jack Nelson spent the week-end and Labor Day holidays in Norfolk. Misses Maryleen Cole, Maxine Cole and Whilus Cole of Norfolk are spending some time with their mother, Mrs. Tom Cole, this week. Lee Riggan left Tuesday after a visit at his home here. Mrs. Rufus Bradley and Miss Hattie Daniel are spending some time out of this week. Hill Holloman of Norfolk has re turned to attend Littleton High School this fall. Raymond Harrison of Newport News was a week-end visitor in the city. BSBSgspawpww...... BLACKOUT IN ENFIELD 1$ A BIG SUCCESS Enfield’s part in the Blackout of the Tarboro District on Friday night was declared a pronounced success by R. B. Davis, local chair man of Civilian Defense. Within a few minutes after the blackout signal Enfield was in total dark ness and remained so for forty-five minutes. Only lights during the period was on the Champion train, and gates, as it passed through town. Highway patrolmen on duty on highway 301 stopped traffic going north and south during the time. Air Raid wardens, auxiliary police and auxiliary firemen, worked with the regular police and fire depart ments in perfect cooperation to bring about the success of this, En field’s first blackout test. Shadoan of Richmond, Va. were Monday vis itors of Mrs. H. S. Harper. Miss Grace Lofton of Norfolk spent the week-end in the home of Mrs. W. T. Mitchell. H. S. Harper and Bryant Reid left last Monday for Blacksburg, Va. where they will begin work. Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Roberts and daughter- of Youngsville spent Sunday with Mrs. Herbert Jen kins. Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Floyd and family and Miss Mary Emma Walker of Roanoke Rapids were visitors of Mrs. Harvey Jenkins Sunday night CHILD SAVED DROWNING IN A LILY POOL Mrs. E. J. Anderson rescued Hen ry Williams, fifteen months old son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Williams, from drowning in a lily pool Friday morning in Enfield. The little boy, with his sister a bout two and one half years old, wandered from their sandpile into a neighbor’s yard and the boy fell into the pool. Mrs. Anderson, on her porch across the street, at tracted by the girl’s screams, rush ed over and pulled the tot from about two feet of water. Quick artificial respiration given by Mrs. Anderson and prompt doc tor’s attention saved the child’s life, it is reported. HONORS BRIDE ELECT Mrs. Pete Garner was hostess on Tuesday evening at a party honor ing Miss Mary Garner, bride elect. Games were enjoyed and prizes a warded. Ice cream, cakes, nuts and candy were served. Miss Garner was remembered with many attractive gifts. Miss Vir ginia Bryant, another bride-elect, was also remembered with a gift.
