Huge 6V4 lb. Sweet Potato Grown In Northampton Co. Farmers undoubtedly have their troubles during “war years” but it is obvious 1942 is a "bumper year” for the sweet potato crop, judging from two large specimens that have y ■ 1 ■ —■ recently been brought to the Herald office by Northampton County farmers. This week Kenney Hammock, who hails from over about the Gas ton section in Northampton Coun ty, nonchalantly strolled into the office exhibiting a yam that came nearer resembling a watermelon in size. He says it weighs exactly six-and-a-quarter pounds, and we are not the least bit skeptical after examining the huge potato. Another unusual circumstance is that it is of the Porta Rica variety, which our agricultural- experts ad vise rarely attain a growth of more than a couple of pounds. A few weeks ago Miss Rosa L. War rick, who lives in the same com munity, reported a Porta Rica sweet potato weighing three-and one-quarter pounds which had been grown on her farm—and it was al most perfectly shaped. The potato grown by Hammock is rather oddly shaped, but its huge size and weight must estab lish some sort of a record for sweet potatoes. Miss Polly Emery has returned from a week’s vacation in Emporia with her grandmother. OVER THE TOP FOR VICTORY with UNITED STATES WAR BONUS-STAMPS Stud for this adorabl ri Regular GUI? SWAN DISPLAY.
