DOUBLE BILL OF RECORDER COURT HELD Judge C. R. Daniel disposed ol two week’s cases appearing before the County Recorder Court ir Halifax in a single session helc Tuesday of this week. Some If cases were tried before Judge Daniel. The court was unusuallj heavy due to the fact there was no Recorder Court last week be cause Superior Court was in ses sion at Halifax. The following cases were dis posed of Tuesday: Earl Topping, charged with tres pass and assault, nol pros wit! leave. Sylvester Tillery, colored ol Newport News, was found guilt} of driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of liquor anc was fined $50.00 and costs. His license was revoked for 12 months Harry Gibson, Ezra Jordan anc H. L. Warren were charged with engaging in an affray. Harrj Gibson was found not guilty. In the case of Ezra Jordan and H. L Warren, judgment was suspended on payment of one-half the costs each. Lero Whitehead, colored of Hali fax, plead guilty to larceny and ■was given eight months on the roads. Vernon Joyner, colored of Scot land Neck, charged with having liquor in his possession for the purpose of sale was found not guilty. Turner Hight, Jr., colored of Weldon, plead guilty to larceny and was given 12 months on the roads. Henry L. Silver, colored of Es sex, was found guilty of being drunk and disorderly and driving a car while drunk. He was fined $50 and costs. His license was re voked for 12 months. Cephus Broady, colored of Scot land Neck, charged with abandon ment and non-support was given eight months on the roads, sus pended on payment of the costs and on condition he gives a bond in the amount of $150 guarantee ing the payment of the sum of $10 per month for his wife and infant child. Arnett Williams, colored of Wel don, was found guilty of assault with a deadly weapon and was given a six months jail sentence which was suspended on payment of the costs and $11 doctors bill, and on condition she remains of good behavior for 12 months and during said time she shall not leave her home between the hours of 6 p. m. and 7 a. m. of the fol lowing day. Percy Pittman, of Whitakers, plead guilty to driving while drunk and was fined $50 and costs. His license was revoked for 12 months. Maurice Williams, colored of En field, was found guilty of bastardy and it is ordered that the defend ant pay the costs and $15 for pro secuting witness expenses and $35 upon birth of the child of Ernes tine Buffalo. This cause is re tained. Edward Stanley, of Weldon, was found not guilty of assault. In the case of Walter Lee, color ed of Littleton Township, charged with shooting and killing Jimmie Silver, probable cause was not found. Willie Joyner, colored of Wel don, was charged with resisting arrest and assault with a deadly weapon. The case was continued to November 10th. Samuel Harris and Edward Stanley, of Weldon, were charged with gambling and were given sixty days each to be suspended on payment of one-half the costs each, including a $5 doctor bill, and on condition each remains of good behavior for two years. Mr. and Mrs. I. J. Byrd and daughter, Julia Whitney of Nor folk were week-end visitors in the city. SANITARY BOARD IS RE-ELECTED Ballot No. 4 faced Voters in the Roanoke Rapids Sanitary District Tuesday when the three members of the Sanitary District Board were voted on. They had no op position and were all re-elected after having been nominated in the May Primary election. Chairman Moody Hedgepeth and members Major Newsom and Robert Cleaton all received a nice complimentary vote sanctioning their May nomination. Victory Courses Offered Students Aurelian Springs Approximately 100 pupils at the Aurelian Springs School began work in order to qualify as mem bers of the Victory Corps on Mon day of this week. Practically all high school pu pils have applied for membership in the general division, while about 50 per cent of the girls and about 75 per cent of the boys have ap plied for membership in additional divisions. The school is offering courses in elementary mechanics, elementary radio, air and Navy mathematics, and science. CIRCLE MEETS Circle No. 5 met in the home of Mrs. J. M. Mohorn in Weldon Monday night at eight o’clock. The , leader, Mrs. M. A. Garris called the meeting to order and read a poem. Mrs. C. E. Williamson con ducted the devotionals and led in prayer. A reading was given by Mrs. Foster Jennings. All old business for the year was dis posed of and plans were made for the next meeting which will be held with Mrs. M. A. Garris. At the conclusion of the meet ing a surprise shower was given Mrs. Emil Eason, a recent bride, who is a member of the Circle. While Mrs. Marshall Richardson played several selections, and as she began playing “Here comes the Bride,” the hostess brought the gifts in on a large tray plac ing them on a table in front of the bride, who then opened the gifts, thanked each one and pass ed them around to be admired. Refreshments were served by the hostess. Aurelian Springs Scrap Campaign Nets 13,000 lbs. The scrap campaign netted ap proximately 13,000 pounds at the Aurelian Springs School. This scrap is being sold to dealers and the profit will be used to carry on various activities at the school. Jake Carter, a senior, was in charge of the campaign at th6 school. HONORS MISS ROBINSON Mrs. Ellen J. Taylor was hos tess at her home in Roanoke Rap ids on Wednesday evening, Oc tober 28, when she entertained a group of friends at a shower hon oring Miss Jeanette Robinson, bride-elect of Weldon. After gifts were presented to Miss Robinson, the guests enjoy ed an evening of Gin Rummy at the conclusion of which high score prize was presented to the hon oree. The hostess, assisted by her mother served a salad course with coffee to the following guests: Mrs. Francis E. Taylor, Mrs. Alice H. Miller, Miss Margaret Ann Gore Miss Miderd Jordan and Miss Jeanette Robinson. American History Is Dramatized By Pupils For Springs PTA Meet The PTA at the Aurelian Springs School met tonight to hear a pro gram given by the high school pu pils. The program consisted of a "radio" presentation by the Amer ican History class under the direc tion of Miss Lucille Harris and a number of papers by the high school pupils at large. The papers were entitled "What America Would Be Like If the Axis Should Win.” •_ Coyt Brown of State College spent the week-end here with his parents Mr. and Mrs. S. D. Brown. Mrs. A.. S.
