BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS HOLDS REGULAR MEETING AT COURTHOUSE MONDAY - ai In a quiet session marked by only “routine business,” the Halifax County Board of Commissioners held their regular monthly meeting Monday at the Courthouse. All members of the Board, and the County Attorney attended the meeting. A motion was duly made and car ried resulting in the County selling 4% acres of land, known as a part of the Allen Smith land, to Flossie White, who is to pay the County $114.48, plus 1941 and 1942 taxes. The Commissioners passed a mo tion forbiddinig the issuance of a license to any person permitting them to sell fireworks in the county for the duration of the war. N. W. Warren made a motion that taxes in the amount of $646.76 listed through errors in the land sale, be charged off. The motion was sec onded by W. J. Collier, and carried. Mr. Warren then made a motion, which was carried, that the follow ing tax listers be appointed to list 1943 taxes: B. (J. Hamlet, Brmkleyville Town ship; R. S. Clark, Butterwood Town ship; J. R. Edmondson, Conoconara Township; R. E. Shervette, Enfield Township; J. H. Lewis, Faucetts Township; W. P. Avent, Halifax Township; M. L. Cole, Littleton Township; L. W. Leggett, Palmyra Township; H. C. Bass, Roseneath Township; A. E. Akers, Roanoke Rapids Township; B. F. Bracy, Scotland Neck Township; and Mrs. J. T. Maddrey, for Weldon Town ship. The Welfare Board came before the Board of Commissioners and dircussed in general the work in their department. The Board of Commissioners requested of the Welfare Board that Jake Wollett of Hollister and Lewis Barfield, of Scotland Neck, be granted old age assistance. J. T. Maddrey, Mayor of Weldon, came before the Board asking for a donation to help pay a man as night operator and watchman for the District Control Center of Weldon. On motion of Mr. Perry, seconded by Mr. Warren and car ried, it was decided that a donation of $25 per month be made for the above mentioned cause. Miss Cox, County Home Demon stration Agent, came before the Board and made a talk about the work in her department. A jury was drawn for two weeks Superior Court beginning Nov. 30, 1942. No further business came before the Board and the meeting was ad journed. HARDISON TO SERVE ONLY Amendment Is Made By Judge; Sentence Was Previously 12-15 Yrs. An amendment was made in the October term of Superior Court which was held last week in Hali fax under Judge Luther Hamilton of Morehead City. On Wednesday, Harry Hardison of Enfield, was given from 12 to 15 years in pris on for attacking Robert Baugham, Enfield business man, who died in a Rocky Mount hospital soon after the attack. The amendment \ lich was made later during the term of court reads as follows: “Judgement heretofore rendered at this term is amended to read as follows: not less than eight nor more than ten-years in State’s Prison.” Hardison was taken to Raleigh Saturday morning to begin his term. TO REGISTER FOR OIL ON NOVEMBER 10 Registration of retailers and dis tributors of fuel oil, including kerosene, has been set for Tues day, Nov. 10th, at the office of the Rationing Board in Roanoke Rapids, for all distributors in the townships of Roanoke Rapids, Littleton and Weldon, between the hours of 9 A. M. to 4 P. M. The delay in receiving coupons makes it necessary to take steps to relieve the situation as far as the consumer is concerned. The Fuel Oil Rationing Regulations will permit sale to consumers on “Coupon Credit” between Nov. 1 and Nov. 15. All “coupon notes” signed by consumers prior to Nov. 1st have been extended through Nov. 21st and must be redeemed by the consumer on or before that date. The Rationing Board now has a sufficient sii"Iy of Form 1100, Application tor heat and hot water for Private Dwelling. Your dealer will now be able to furnish you with this form, or you may obtain a copy at the Rationing Board. This completed form must be filed with the Board on or before Nov ember 15th. Application forms for allotments of fuel oil for heating and hot water for premises other than private dwellings, including mul tiple dwellings such as apart ment houses, rooming houses (with four or more rooms for rent), institutions and commercial establishments, as well as the forms on which to apply for fuel oil for cooking and lighting, have not as yet been received by the Board but are expected within the next few days. OPA officials urge homeowners to use the greatest prudence in burning fuel oil. They warned that any upward adjustment of fuel oil rations in case of abnormally cold weather this winter will de pend primarily upon supplies. There is a definite and acute shor tage of fuel oil. The diminishing stocks must be safeguarded for our war industries and military effort. OUT-OF-TOWN PATIENTS AT HOSPITAL The following out-of-town pat ients were reported at the Roan oke Rapids Hospital this week: Mrs. Shirley Copeland of Gaston; C. A. Dickens of Littleton; Mrs. E. W. Martin of Conway; Mrs. Clifton Sumner of Conway; Mrs. W. D. Whitehead of Pleasant Hill; and George Worrell of Seaboard. J. R.
