The regular Saturday Night square dance will be held as usual at Rosemary Recreation Club this Saturday night beginning at 8 f). m. and ending promptly at mid night. One of the largest crowds of the year packed the hall last Saturday night to square dance to the popular tunes of the Car olina Hill Billies. The admission is only twenty-five cents per person to dancers and spectators alike. It is one dance that is properly chaperoned and conducted. It is held each week end at, and spon sored by Rosemary Recreation Club at 1100 Franklin Street. Ser vice men are welcome at all times. Why don’t we wake up to the fact that our athletic teams at the local High School are fading more and more as the years pass? We are now at a period when we cannot even play on a par with Littleton, Tarboro, Scotland Neck and after this Friday pro bably add Weldon to the above list. I think that former Coach Cranford Hoyle, who was a darn fine High School Coach, would agree with me when I say that, a coach is only as good as his material. So why haven”t we got the material? We have a student body twice or three times as large as the above schools. We have four Junior schools in our City, namely, Clara Heame, Vance Street, Rosemary and Cen tral. To develope athletes, and school spirit, why not a football league composed of four teams to play at least two games with each other during the season for the Midget Football title of the city? A regular basketball schedule with the four same schools, also a base ball schedule. It would probably take five or six years for it to start paying dividends, but when it did, Oh! Boy. What a steady flow of talent it would proxnde. You would have boys coming out for your fotball team knowing what it was all about. Basketball and baseball the same way. I’ll answer the first question that probably would be fired at me — Who’s going to finance that “Mad Dream?” Well! Haven’t we got enough dough to buy a few footballs, basketboalls, base ball bats and balls? I think the kids could make out with that — What about coaches! There are plenty of High School athletes lo cated here in town who if ap proached properly would donate time enough to coach a team at the various schools. In time the various Grammar Schools would get pepped up about their teams, smd then you would see the be ginning of what people call “School Spirit” — and it would last thru rugn cjcnooi. And when we go out and see the Yellow Jackets get walloped —m football, basketball or base ball — Let's not ride the team — dam it the kids au e swell — let’s not ride the coach — he’s the fall guy — let’s ride ourselves, because roe haven’t had the foresight to try and develops Junior Athletics in Roanoke Rapids — But then again why should I worry, 1 have not even got a son — Maybe its because I get a big lump in my throat, when a Yellow jax team trots on the field — Who kmows ? Dopey Dan still goggle-eyed from that Georgia-Florida score, wails weakly from the back of Allie Wood's Pool Room — “It’s Georgetown over N. C. State, Duke over Carolina — maybe a tie — Wake Forest over George Washington — an’ an’ an’ — Ala bama over Georgia Tech.” Pickups 'n Putouts: The Yellow Jax will clash with Weldon Highs there on Friday af ternoon — Watch the fireworks — Who was the fog horn rooter with the Scotland Neck team last Friday p. m. . .
