FUNERAL FOR HRS. HILL8KSN HELD SUNDAY Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Halifax Methodist Church for Mrs. Sallie Twisdale Millikin, 62, who died at her home in Halifax Saturday morning at 11:25. The services were conducted by Rev. W. F. Walters and Rev. C. E. Crawford. Interment followed in the Steph enson Burial ground nearby. Mrs. Millikin was a daughter of the late James H. Twisdale and Lucy Poythress Twisdale of War ren County. She had spent prac tically her entire life in Halifax County, and was an active and life-long member of the Halifax Methodist Church. Mrs. Millikin died after a four months illness, and was preceded in death by her husband by only three weeks. Surviving are nine children: Mrs. H. E. Carlyle, Mrs. T. E. Ow ens, Perry, Raymond, Ferrell, and Buck Millikin, all of Halifax, Mrs. Whitley Draper and Almond Mil likin of Weldon, and Louis Millikin of Fort Bragg; one brother, James R. Twisdale of Halifax and three sist.prs. Mrs O R RpfiH r»f fax, Mrs. Woodard Jones of Nor folk, and Mrs. Ernest Branch of Rich Square. The beautiful and numerous floral offerings were mute evidence of the high esteem in which she was held by her many friends. Mrs. Millikin had lived a life of unselfish and untiring devotion to her family and to all with whom she came in contact. MONDAY NITE BRIDGE CLUB The Monday Night Bridge Club enjoyed the hospitality of Mrs. Elizabeth Griffiths on November 23 at her home in the Patterson Apartments. Eight guests made up two tables of players, and high prize of defense stamps was won by Mrs. R. W. Jennett. A salad plate was enjoyed at ten fifteen. The players included Mesdames Al len Zollicoffer, Scott Benton, How ard Pruden, J. E. McGee, Carroll Wilson, Julian Allsbrook and R. W. Jennett. Home Economics Class Entertain At Thrift Lunch As the conclusion of their food unit, the Roaoke Rapids 8-1A Home Economics class entertained with an informal luncheon on Thursday November 19, in the dining room of the Home Economics laboratory. The following guests were invited: Mrs. John Smith, Miss Celia Dai!, Miss Cornelia Clarke, and Junior Talley. Since the girls had been studying food budgets, their problem was to plan an appetizing, menu on the smallest amount of money possible. The meal, which cost $1.55, con sisted of apple cocktail, barbecued meat balls, buttered carrots, mash ed potatoes, cole slaw, hot rolls, mince meat tarts, and hot tea. The decorations were of an au tumn theme. The table decoration was a winter garden made of par tridge berries, moss, tiny pine cones and gum. Every girl in the class had some special duty to perform. Those having special duties were: Betty Patterson and Mary Katherine Liv erman, hostesses; and Doris Sue Wilson and Audrey Hux, waitress es. This luncheon was given under the supervision of Miss Ellen Doug las Boone. Bass - Whitehead j The wedding of Miss Ruth Whitehead of Weldon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Whitehead of Seaboard to Private John Bass son of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Bass of Seaboard was solemnized Mon day, Nov. 2nd, in Tennessee. Mrs. Bass for a number of years has been connected with Edwards Beauty Shop in Weldon. Private Bass is stationed in Tennessee where he and his bride are making their home for the present. MRS. WHITE ENTERTAINS On Thursday afternoon Mrs. Ar mond White gave a tea at her home in the Patterson Apartments honoring her mother, Mrs. Speer, of Detroit, Mich. Refreshments were served, and a large number of guests had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Speer during the hours for calling. Rufus G. Gray Is Up For Advnced Training In Navy Oxford, Ohio, — Rufus Garland Gray, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus H. Gray, 5 Star Route, Box 61, Ro anoke Rapids, having demonstrated special skills in a series of aptitude tests taken while in recruit train ing, has been assigned to advanced instruction at the Navy’s new train ing school for radiomen at Miami university here. After completing the streamlined 16-week course in the transmission and reception of radio code mes sages, he will be eligible for ad vancement to a petty officer’s rat ing. Ultimately he will be assigned to specialized duties with the fleet. Gray enlisted in the Navy last September and received his “boot” training at the U. S. Naval Training Station, Great Lakes, 111. The naval school for radiomen is one of many similar training units which have been established re cently on the campuses of univer sities throughout the country. Mrs. L. R. Hasty and Miss Helen Hasty spent the week end in Wil mington and visited Lewis B. Hasty Petty Officer, 1st Class, U. S. Na vy Reserve. Corp. John W. Gay Has More Stripes To Go* On Uniform Perrin Field, Texas, November 26, Corporal John W. Gay, son of Mr. and Mrs. J_iumis C. Gay of 121 Hamilton Street, Roanoke Rap ids, is busy sewing on additional stripes since his promotion from the rank of private first class was announced. Corporal Gay is assigned to the 508th Basic Train ing Squadron. Mrs. Hicks Hill spent the week end in Greensboro.
