TRAINING FOR
DEFENSE JOBS
Eleven young men and women
from Roanoke Rapids and vicinity
are training for jobs in defense
work through the facilities of the
NYA, according to announcement
made this week by Mrs. Clalee M.
Dunnagan, who works the Green
ville area for the NYA.
Boys from the city now station
ed at the NYA Resident Center
at Durham, include: Eddie Wilson
Warrick, Arthur Dorough, Walter
O. Reed, Buck Wright and W. L.
James.
The following three young lad
ies from here are training at the
Scotland Neck Resident Center:
Katie Gregory, Edith Keeter and
Nancy Barkley, while Misses May
belle Connor and Jenny Bell Wood
are stationed at the Resident Cen
ter in Greenville.
All of the boys are taking weld
ing and machine shop work, while
the girls have selected aircraft
woodwork, machine shop work and
radio for their careers. A dozen
or more courses designed to skill
workers for defense projects are
offered by the NYA, and appli
cants have a wide choice in train
ing for jobs.
The NYA opened an office in
the city some three weeks ago
under the direction of Mrs. Dun
nagan. It is located next door to
the Peoples Theatre. Office hours
are maintained there all day Wed
nesday, and until noon Saturday.
Interviews may be arranged either
of these days.

District Meeting
On Thursday, November 19, 1942,
the Home Economics Teachers of
Roanoke Rapids High School, Miss
Evelyn Tillman, Miss Margaret To
lor, and Miss Ellen D. Boone, at
tended the monthly meeting of
Home Economics Teachers held in
Rich Square.
Home Economics Departments
from five of the North Eastern
Counties of North Carolina are
represented in these meetings. The
subject for the year is Making
War Needs. At the November
meeting the subject discussed was
Various Ways Home Economics
Can Aid in the Community Pro
gram.

cussed in relation to the Home

tion, Cooperating Agencies, Public
ity, and Joint Program. Miss Ev
elyn Tillman from Roanoke Rapids
led the discussion on Publicity.
Herbert Bridgers
Is Commissioned
A 2nd Lieutenant
Herbert Vinson Bridgers, 23, son
of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Bridgers,
of Enfield, received his commiss
ion as 2nd Lieutenant of Marines
at Quantieo, Va., on October 31,
1942. He enlisted May 6th, this
year, and was called to the service
August 25th. He has about ten
more weeks of training at Quan
tico.
Lt. Bridgers graduated at the
Enfield High School in 1935, and
from the University of North Car
olina in 1940, receiving his B. S.
degree. Before enlisting with the
marines he was working with the
Commercial Credit Company, of
Charleston, S. C.
BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Montgom
ery, of Enfield, announce the birth
of a son, Frances Alexander Mont
gomery, III, on Wednesday, Octo
ber 28th in a Wilson hospital. Mrs.
Montgomery is the former Miss
Janie Hunter, of Enfield.
Stroud - Shearin
Miss Lucy Shearin and Mr. Ed
ward Stroud were united in mar
riage on Friday, November 6. The
wedding ceremony was performed
by the Rev. Walter C. Ball, in St.
Paul’s Methodist Church, Golds
boro.
Mrs. Stroud is the daughter of
the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Dal
las Shearin, of Roanoke Rapids.
She is a graduate of East Caro
lina Teachers’ College, Greenville,
and is employed as a teacher in
the Lenoir County schools. Mr.
Stroud, the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Eddie Stroud, of Kinston, attend
ed Brevard and Riverside Military
Academy.
Following a brief wedding trip
to unannounced points, Mr. and
Mrs. Stroud will be at home at 406
West Lenoir Avenue.

Enfield, announce the birth of a
daughter, Bonnie Lou, on Wed
nesday, October 28th, in a Rocky
Mount hospital. Mrs. Cook is
