To Local Chapter

' chapter of the American Red
Cross has finally been attained, ac
cording to announcement made to
day by L. S. Neal, chairman of
^ the annual roll call drive of the
Roanoke Rapids chapter.
The goal for the local chapter
was $10,000.00, and this amount
has been exceeded by $1,246.47, ac
cording to figures made public by
~ Mr. Neal today. Last week it was
* announced that the local chapter
was several hundred dollars short
of attaining their goal in the war
fund drive, and an appeal for don
ations among city theatre-goers
was resorted to in order to make
* up the deficit, The campaign in
city movie houses not only made
up the deficit, but enabled the
chapter to exceed their quota by a
substantial amnnnt

Cleveland Smith Held
In City Jail Awaiting
Trial On Five Charges
Cleveland Smith, 22-year old lo
cal white man, is being held in the
city jail awaiting trial on five
charges following his arrest in Ox
ford last week by state highway
patrolmen.
State troopers arrested Smith
to answer to a charge of stealing
two tires from a panel delivery
truck belonging to the Dr. Pepper
Bottling Co. of this city, and he
was lodged in the city jail to
await preliminary hearing on this
charge, which has been set for
Monday, before Mayor Kelly Jen
kins. Meanwhile, it develops he
must serve a 6 months suspended
sentence on a bootlegging charge
in Northampton County.
The Northampton case, together
with the one he faces here for tire
thefts, brings to a total of five
the number of charges confronting
the young Roanoke Rapids man.

Elect Mavor And Two
Council Members; No
One Has Filed As-5f*t"
The regular city election will be
held on Tuesday, May 4th, to
elect a mayor and two city coun
cilmen, one from the North and
one from the South wards.
Kelly Jenkins is the present
mayor, while A. N. Martin serves
j as councilman from the South
jward, and W. P. Taylor as coun
cilman from the North ward. To
date no one has filed for any of
the city offices. Filing time ends
next Tuesday, April 13th.
The polls will be open at the
Rosemary Graded School building
for the South ward, and at 200
Roanoke Avenue for the North
ward. S. C. Cook and A. M. Cam
eron are registrars, while the
judges are E. R. Myrick, J. W.
Branch, J. A. Wood and W. G.
Alligood.
Registration books are open to
voters from 9 a. m. to 5 p. m. be
ginning Saturday, April 10th,
through April 17th.

Here Next Thursday
Miss Mildred Dozier, president
of the Rocky Mount Business and
Professional Women’s Club, to
gether* With several * members of
that organization, held a meeting
at the Municipal Building Tuesday
night for the purpose of taking
preliminary steps toward the or
ganization of such a club in Ro
anoke Rapids.
Although the attendance at Tues
day night’s meeting was small,
those present confirmed the be
lief that scores of ladies engaged
in the business life of the city were
interested in organizing a club
here, and as a result of the meet
ing it is believed a club will be
formed in the city shortly.
Miss Mabel Bacon, membership
chairman of the state organization
whose headquarters are in Wil
mington, and a group of women
from the Rocky Mount club will
again visit the city next Thursday
at which time definite steps to
ward the organization of a club
for Roanoke Rapids will be taken.
All ladies interested in this
movement are invited to attend
the meeting next Thursday evening
which will be held at the Munici
pal ^pilding, in the court-room,
starting promptly at 8 o’clock.
Although women leaders in the
business and civic life of the city
have been contacted in an effort
to promote interest in the organi
zation of the club here, next
Thursday night’s meeting is not an
“invitational affair,” and everyone
interested in the movement is
urged to attend.
Dance At Armory
Saturday Benefit

iary Firemen and members of
the Bombing and Demolition
squads are jointly sponsoring
a dance Saturday night from 8
’til 12 o’clock in the Armory.
Music will be furnished by a
local band and a good time is
assured everyone.
There will be a small admis
sion charge but no charge will
be made for round dancing. All
of the net proceeds will be giv
en to the Red Cross War Drive

bonds to be sold during April in
the Second War Loan Drive in
North Carolina is $62,000,000.00 and
there has been allotted to Region
Two $3,478,000.00.

set at $5,000,000,000.00, making to
tal bond sales $13,000,000,000.00, be
ing the largest sale of govern
ment securities that any govern
ment in the world has ever offered
at one time.

est way to bring this conflict to
an end is by having our men bet
ter equipped and better prepared
than our enemies. “There is no

States Government Bond and the
War Savings Bonds offer a most
attractive investment,” were words
spoken by the late J. P. Morgan.

The clinic will be held on
Tuesdays and Fridays only, and
