* SCHOOLYEAR .NEARS CLOSE AT ENFIELD Commencement exercises of the *942-1943 Enfield School Session began Sunday evening with the baccaulaureate sermon preached in the Baptist Church by Rev. E. Nor fleet Gardner, Pastor of the First ' ^Baptist Church of Henderson. * Hymns "God of Our Fathers” and “All Hail The Power” were sung by the congregation and an anthem "Praise the Lord” by the Glee Club, under the direction of «rs. John Newton. Principal H. Kendall introduced the Rev. Gardner who delivered his sermon “Graduation” to the twenty-one graduates. Rev. B. D. Critcher gave the benediction. Marshals were Wilbur Bridges, Xlhief Marshal; J. C. Cuthrell, Jacksie DeLysle and Susan Gra ham. Johnnie White, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. White, is the class Mascot. ^ Other activities during this week ^SUll be the musical recital of Mrs. John Newton’s class on Wednesday evening at 8:30 o’clock in the school auditorrum: On Thursday night at 8:30 the Class Night pro fram will be given and on Friday ight at 8:30 the graduating ex ercises will be held at which time Nathan Yelton, State School Com missioner, will give the commence ment address, and diplomas will delivered to the graduates Lt. Geo. S. Wood Wins His Wings At Hondo, Texas AAF Navigation School, Hondo, Texas, April 29—Hondo Army Air Field ’ last Thursday, April 22nd, ^warded silver navigator’s wings a record-breaking number of “Boomerang Boys” who have mast ered the science of navigation. Roanoke Rapids was represented at the military graduation by Lt. George S. Wood, 23-year old city youth who resides at 111 Jackson Street. Present from the city for the ceremonies at Hondo was his sister-in-law, Mrs. J. A. Wood, and Miss Sarah Crawford Towe, his fiancee. Lt. Wood and Miss Towe ^ere married at that same after noon, an account of which will be found in this issue. After 18 weeks of intensive training at the Army Air Forces’ ’Tgest navigation school, this tfeung officer has proved his abil ity to direct American bombers to enemy targets and to find the way back home again. He now stands ready for active duty with tt,e world’s largest air fleet. ► 'Luring his course at Hondo, the navigation cadet flies approximate ly 15,000 miles on training mis sions. His flying classroom is one of two ships-the AT-7 Navigator v-nd the B-34 Ventura. Before he jjlarns to navigate by the stars, by compass, radio and pilotage (ob servation of familiar landmarks). “We'll Find the Way” is the slogan of the boomerang boys from Texas, and they are eager jQl follow in the footsteps of other Hondo navigators who have blazed aerial trails in every theatre of war. tCapel - Boseman Miss Virginia Lee Boseman. daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Boseman of Weldon, became the bride of Braxton Naff Capel, of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Capel of Garysburg in a quiet ceremony Saturday morning, April 10th at 9:30 at the Methodist parsonage in Stillwater, Okla. with the Rev. Joseph E. Bowers offici affng. Mrs. Capel, for several years has been employed in Weldon and continue her work there. Mr. Capel, before his induction into the United States Army, was ^jlretary-treasurer of the Weldon P. C. Co. He is now attending clerical school at A- and M. Col lege in Stillwater, Okla. Miss Francis Glasgow of Wash ington, D. C., Miss Alice Mae Glas gow and Miss Carol Kincaid of Surry, Va. were week end guests of Mrs. Haywood Glasgow. Otis Everett, U. S. N., of Norfolk visited his wife here this week. Miss Marie Cates of Norfolk was the week end guest of her parents Mr. and Mrs. N. A. Cates. Misa Lavada Bartley left last Sunday for Norfolk. Miss Maxine Mason of Raleigh was the week end guest of her mother. _ Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Bunch and son, Billie Bunch, were visitors in Palmyra Sunday. Miss Mary B. Cannon of Raleigh, spent the week end here.
