53rd Convention King's Daughters JHeld In Durham To Be Held May 5-6; Many Ladies Of City To Attend Conference The 53rd annual convention of The King’s Daughters and sons will meet in Durham May 5-6. The King’s Daughters and Sons f:as organized in New York City anuary 13, 1886 by ten women from ten different walks of life who were interested in the devel opment of spiritual life and Christ ian activities. a Today the membership of ap proximately 70,000 encircles the globe. They are supporting homes for aged, hospitals for incurables, day nurseries and aiding under privileged children. Perhaps no a^her organization in America is crning more for National Defense than are the King’s Daughters and Sons of America. Dr. Brantley Watson, Duke Uni versity, with his quartet will fur bish special music. He will lead ^oup singing also. Hr. Frank Pierson, Secretary of the Durham Chamber of Commerce will be the after-dinner speaker and the Hon. Wm. B. Umstead, former «S. Congressman, will deliver Ee principal address of the even ing. His subject will be “Women in National Defense and Post War Life.” Thursday at 9:30 a. m. the con dition will get under way at the Kng’s Daughters’ Home on Buch anan Boulevard. Mrs. Walton V. Byers, a local woman prominent in the social, pariotic and re ligious life of the city will lead devotional. Mrs. Byers is an ac complished speaker. All daughters and friends are urged to get in on time so as not to miss her worthwhile message. Mrs. T. R. Manning, Roanoke Rapids, who is State Chaplain, #Rl conduct the Memorial for the Daughters who have passed away this year. The flowers used in the service will be sent to Raleigh to be placed on the grave of Mrs. W. H. S. Burgwyn who served as ^Oanch President for seventeen years. At 1:00 p. m. the Sheltering Home Circle will be hostess to the entire convention at a buffet luncheon. Mrs. J. M. Cheek, local Resident and her committee will have charge of arrangements for the luncheon.lt is hoped that a large number of delegates and members will be present for all sessions as much important busi ijfcss ' will be transacted. Among the officers to be elected are the president, the second vice-presi dent and the treasurer. The committe on general ar rangements is composed of Mrs. 'Aomas V. Young, President, Mrs. Z. A. Evans, members of the Senior Class of the Enfield High School, entertained with a Theatre Party on Friday night. After the show the party went to the Drug Store for refreshments. On Monday evening Miss Es ter Mae Hines and Miss Magnolia Whitley were hostesses at a supper at Hardee’s Cabin near Enfield honoring the teachers and seniors of the high school. Charles Graham, president of the Senior Class, entertained with a weiner roast at Sherrod Cabin Tuesday evening. Miss Josephine Britt was host ess to the school Sorority in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Britt on “Sherrod Heights” Wednesday evening. Twelve guests were present and light refresh ments were served. - ___ f CELEBRATE 63rd BIRTHDAY Honoring the 63rd birthday of Mrs.«R. L. Brantley, friends and relatives gathered at her home at Aurora on Sunday, April 18th. A picnic lunch was served on the lawn. Mrs. Brantley was born April 18th, 1880, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Edwards, of Edwards, N. C. She was married to the late Robert L. Brantley on March 17, 1897. She has eleven children, twenty-one grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Alford, general superin tendent of Roanoke Rapids Hospi tal, will attend the Carolinas-Vir ginias Hospital Conference to be held in Roanoke, Va., on Monday and Tuesday of next week. The hospital conference will be held at the Hotel Roanoke, and will include extensive discussions on food rationing, priorities, person nel problems, blood and plasma banks, and other important prob lems confronting hospital execu tives today. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Starke of of Morehead City spent the week end here with Mr. and Mrs. R. I. Starke. Miss Odessa Nethercutt and Edna Earl Wood, of Norfolk,were week end guests of their parents.
